A lifelong resident of The Valley before moving to her beloved Skaneateles where she kept track of when the ice came in and went out each year. Prior to moving to Skaneateles full time, Roberta spent summers on the lake swimming and sailing at her family’s camp.
The story goes that Roberta fell for Bobby Johnson in kindergarten, where he won her over with a candy bar. Roberta worked briefly for the New York Telephone Company until Bob proposed.
With their children onto their independent lives, Bob and Berta sold their LaFayette Road home and Skaneateles camp that had belonged to Bob’s parents, to purchase a year-round home closer to the village on East Lake Road. When Bob retired from the business his dad founded, BR Johnson (& Son), they sold the East Lake home and moved across the lake to a smaller year-round home. During the Skaneateles years, Roberta delivered Meals on Wheels, ready with a meal and her warm smile to those on her route.
After Bob’s passing in 2002, Roberta was able to continue enjoying her lakeside home, tending her flower baskets and endless enjoyment watching the lake, binoculars at the ready. Her family was always welcome to share the joys of the lake and the rare lake beachfront.
Once Roberta’s health made it necessary for some daily care, she moved to Laurelwood at The Highlands in Pittsford, N.Y., to be close to her daughter. Six years ago, Roberta moved to The Living Center, on the same campus, for the next level of care. Her smile stayed with her and her picture is on the brochure for The Living Center.
Her family extends their thanks to The Living Center at The Highlands. Extra special thanks from her daughter, Marj, for the consistent warm care by past and present staff, especially Amanda, Latoya and Debbie. Roberta was always ready to sing the old favorites, was known to shake her booty on occasion and never came across a dessert she didn’t like.
Burial to be private followed by a reception at The Sherwood Inn on May 27, 2022 at noon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Roberta’s memory to The Skaneateles Lake Association, PO Box 862, Skaneateles, NY 13152 or The Living Center General Fund, Attention: Cindy Hitchcock, 500 Hahnemann Trail, Pittsford, NY 14534.
