Mary Agnes (Graser) Roickle, of Westvale, born on Aug. 15, 1922, departed this life on May 25, 2020. Mary was born to William H. and Lena R. Graser in Syracuse, and was raised in the Tipperary Hill area. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1940 and then went to The College of St. Rose where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1944. Later in life she went on to receive her certificate of teaching from SUNY Cortland and performed graduate work at Syracuse University. Early in her career Mary became a nursing instructor at Crouse Irving Hospital until he marriage to Edward B. Roickle of Syracuse in 1963. At that time, Mary became Director of In-Service Education at Crouse. She went on to become a school nurse at Bishop Ludden High School and a school nurse teacher in the Syracuse City School District. She retired in 1984 and joined Ed in his own retirement. The couple enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, traveling, their grandchildren, Notre Dame and Syracuse University Athletics, bridge and church activities. Mary was a past president of the parish council and a former trustee of St. Charles Borromeo Church.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years in 2001; her sisters, Catherine Flavin, and Gertrude Farrington McGuire and brothers, Leo and William Graser. Mary is survived by four children: Edward W. Roickle (Ruth) of New Woodstock, N.Y., Robert J. Roickle (Mary Kay) of Syracuse, Mary Agnes Roickle (Martha Carter) of Columbia, CT, and Rosemary Roickle Ryan (Kevin) of Chittenango, N.Y., as well as 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Mary’s family would like to thank the staff at St. Camillus, particularly the third floor and Baker Unit for caring for her during her four and a half years there. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses at Upstate at Community, 3 West Unit for the incredible dedication, compassion and care shown to mom during her last days. You are essential and appreciated.
Due to regulations services are private, and a memorial mass will be held in her honor at a later date. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.
