Lina M. Barr, 93, died peacefully on Memorial Day, May 25, 2020, at the Syracuse Home in Baldwinsville. Lina was born in Altenhasungen, Germany. She grew up hoping to become a nurse, but World War II ended that dream. She survived the bombings and deprivations of World War II and met her husband, Robert W. Barr, when his outfit stopped in her hometown on their way to Berlin. They fell in love and married in 1945.
Robert stayed in the Army and Lina became an Army wife. A brave and determined lady, she traveled with him to his stations in Germany, France, Alaska, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky and New Jersey. During the Korean War, Lina, with their two little children, had to move to Ogdensburg, N.Y., and stayed with relatives. Though things were very difficult for her, she used that time to learn to drive and to read and write English.
When Robert retired from the Army in 1967, they bought a home and settled in Baldwinsville where she has lived since. Lina worked at General Electric and at E. W. Edwards Department Store. She had a “green thumb” and loved gardening, accompanying her husband on fishing trips, playing cards with friends, doing puzzles and reading.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, who died in 1994, and then her daughter, Trudy Fitzpatrick, in 2006, and then her son-in-law, Harold Fitzpatrick in 2007. Lina is survived by her son, Robert W. Barr Jr., daughter-In-law, Christine M. Barr, and grandson, Andrew R. Barr.
