Leadership in the town of Van Buren will remain the same going into 2020 as several incumbent officials held onto their seats.
Town Supervisor Claude Sykes, a Republican who ran unopposed, retained his seat with 2,238 votes (98.68% of ballots cast).
Town Clerk/Receiver of Taxes Lynn Precourt, also unopposed, kept her seat with 2,280 votes (99.61%). Precourt, a Republican, has held the position of town clerk since 2002 and receiver of taxes since 2009.
Justice Darlene O’Kane will stay on the bench, having earned 2,338 votes (99.53%). O’Kane, a Republican, ran unopposed.
While the race for three seats on the Van Buren Town Board drew a crowd of five candidates, incumbents prevailed there too: Wendy Van Der Water was the top vote-getter, receiving 2,142 votes, or 29.73% of ballots cast. Van Der Water ran on the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines. In second place and also returning to the board is Mary Frances Sabin, who ran on Republican, Conservative and Independence lines as well. Sabin received 1,831 votes (25.42%). Rounding out the top three was Howard Tupper, who ran on the Republican and Independence lines. He received 1,550 votes (21.52%).
Democratic challenger Kristen Muncy received 1,073 votes (14.89%) and Conservative challenger John Kerniski received 585 votes (8.12%).
Incumbent Onondaga County Legislator Ken Bush Jr., a Republican who ran unopposed, will continue to represent the 13th District. Bush earned 5,345 votes, or 98.94% of ballots cast.
