To the editor:
For over five years I have been the town of Lysander’s highway superintendent. I had applied and been appointed to that position when no one from the existing highway department was willing to step up and accept that responsibility.
Subsequently, the townspeople elected me twice by wide margins and I have worked diligently to serve their highway needs. My term is now due and I wish to be reelected this coming November.
I would normally use the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party channels to accomplish that, as I have done twice before, but political treachery blocked these routes. Since my maternal grandfather was a New York state highway superintendent and a local town Democrat chairman, I decided to honor his memory and apply for the Democrat endorsement. After much discussion the Democrat committee accepted my explanation of bipartisan principles and dedication to the endorsement and will work hard to demonstrate those principles, and defeat any who would try to divide our town.
