With the June 30 retirement of Greg Maxwell, the town of Salina is in need of a new comptroller.
Since 2012, Salina and Van Buren have shared Maxwell’s services 60-40 in an intermunicipal agreement. Salina paid about $68,000 of Maxwell’s salary and benefits.
“He’ll [leave] big shoes to fill,” Salina Supervisor Mark Nicotra said of Maxwell. “This skill set is relatively unique because there’s just not a lot of people who do municipal accounting at this level. Greg is not one of [the best], I think he is the best municipal comptroller in the area.”
While Maxwell has officially retired from both towns, Van Buren Supervisor Claude Sykes said Maxwell will continue to work two days a week in Van Buren.
“We’re going to put him back on part-time,” Sykes said.
Nicotra said the search for a new comptroller for Salina has begun. He said the town is open to a part-time comptroller, a full-timer or a new intermunicipal agreement with another town. In the meantime, Maxwell will be available if Salina needs anything before finding a new comptroller.
“He’s going to be around if we need help or if we have questions. He’s the kind of guy that’s always going to be there,” Nicotra said. “I’m not worried.”
