DeWitt — Incumbent Ed Michalenko has secured another term as DeWitt Town Supervisor, beating out Republican challenger Greg Scicchitano with 52.62 percent votes to Michalenko and 47.30 percent to Scicchitano.
“I want to thank DeWitt voters for their support. I am grateful, humbled and honored to be supervisor,” said Michalenko, a Democrat, on election night. “I appreciate voter intelligence, their focus on the real issues and ability to recognize truth.”
Michalenko served on the DeWitt Town Board 11 years before becoming town supervisor, a position he has held for the past seven-and-a-half years. Currently, Michalenko works as head of the non-profit Onondaga Environmental Institute. Michalenko was endorsed by the Democrat, Working Families and Veterans parties.
“Obviously I wanted to win, but it is what it is,” said Scicchitano. “I was more disappointed that there was such a low voter turnout. It’s sad that people don’t turn out in the end.”
There were 5,700 ballots cast in the DeWitt town election, out of a total 16,000 registered voters, according to the Onondaga County Board of Elections.
Scicchitano said he would consider running for political office in the future.
Scicchitano is an attorney in DeWitt who served as the DeWitt town attorney from 2004 to 2013. He also was employed as legal counsel for Senator John DeFranisco from 1997 to 2002. He was endorsed by the Republican, Independence, Conservative and Reform parties. He ran for county legislator in 1997 and was unsuccessful.
The supervisor position has a two-year term.
