VILLAGE OF LIVERPOOL – The parking lot at the Village Mall now basks in the azure glow of a massive new mural painted by Liverpool Art Center owner Sandra Sabene and her collaborator, Jillian Hagadorn.
“Our landlord here really supports the arts,” Sabene said. “He purchased all the supplies and paid us a commission. We’re hoping the mural brings some attention to Liverpool Art Center and the many businesses within the Village Mall.”
The mural, “Adirondack Escape,” is based on a painting Sabene sold at Hope Café last year. In July, Sabene and Hagadorn went to work on the 150-foot by 10-foot wall on the building’s northwest side.
Sabene is an experienced landscape and wildlife artist with a particular appreciation of New York State sceneries.
“I brought in Jillian Hagadorn because of her mural experience in Fair Haven and Syracuse,” Sabene said. “She’s skilled at reproducing photographic images in her work.”
The two painters used a total of 10 gallons and six quarts of exterior paint bought at Purcell’s Wallpaper and Paint Co., in Liverpool.
“The colors were intentionally kept to a simple palette of black, white, turquoise and peach,” Sabene said.
The artists are giving the “Escape” some final touches, and they expect it to be completed within two or three weeks.
Earlier this year, Sabene painted a more modest mural at the new Amazon Fulfillment Center, at 7211 Morgan Road. Titled “Yeti Summer,” the Amazon painting is much smaller than the Village Mall work and far more whimsical.
“I created the design in the Procreate App and it was reproduced exactly as I submitted,” Sabene said.
Amazon commissioned the artwork which Sabene finished in June.
She already has a few more murals planned for next year. And she hopes to do some more.
“I am available to be hired for interior and exterior murals,” Sabene said. “I plan to submit more ideas for Liverpool murals that depict the incredible history of this beautiful village.”
