The Central New York Music Teachers Association held its annual High School Vocal Competition on Saturday, April 21, at Onondaga Community College Recital Hall.
The singers performed at the winner’s recital at Park Central Presbyterian Church on 504 E. Fayette St. in Syracuse on April 28. The public was invited to attend the free recital and hear the talent nurtured in Central New York, the next generation of great artists.
A total of $775 in prize money was awarded to singers from four counties in Upstate New York. Hickey’s Music in Ithaca was one of the sponsors of the competition.
The judges included soprano Julie Newell, a Syracuse native and distinguished professor at SUNY-Fredonia, and tenor Jonathan Howell, a Syracuse native completing his Master of Music degree at Syracuse University.
The winners are from Fayetteville-Manlius High School (Caroline Gaglione), Cicero-North Syracuse High School (Elizabeth Wool & Alexis Martin), Sherburne-Earlville High School (Rebecca Turner), Cortland High School (Charlie Rowe), Oneida High Sschool (Benjamin O’Connell), Jamesville-DeWitt High School (Kelli Wright), Hamilton Junior-Senior High School (Dora Ammerman), and a home-schooled student entering Nottingham High School (Andreia Krantz).
The winners are students of Sabine Krantz and Neva Pilgrim of Syracuse, Lauralyn Kolb of Clinton, Marty Heresniak of Ithaca and Gayle Ross of Cicero.
