SYRACUSE – Aidan Cali was the lone member of the Baldwinsville wrestling team to reach the top spot on the podium during last Saturday’s Section III Class AA championships at Henninger High School.
Yet it was Cali named as the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler for the way he performed on the way to the 110-pound championship as the Bees, overall, could only finish fifth in a nine-team field.
Cali, who was 20-5 on the season, had the top seed and a bye straight into the semifinals, where he proceeded to shut out Cicero-North Syracuse’s Kevin Mosso 9-0 to reach the final against Jamesvville-DeWitt/CBA’s Jordyn Hill.
Here, Cali did not get a pin, but accumulated enough points to earn a 17-2 technical fall over Hill and earn a place as one of the top seeds for the Division I overall sectional meet this Saturday at SRC Arena.
Several Bees will join Cali at Onondaga Community College, including Aaron Fredenburg, who beat Dylan Radcliffe (West Genesee) 15-6 in an impressive semifinal, only to get pinned by J-D/CBA’s Gerald Vielhauer in the second period of the final.
J-D/CBA won the team title with 211.5 points to runner-up C-NS’s 194, with B’ville earning 122.5 points that included a pair of third-place finishes.
Keagan Hayes got third at 126 pounds when he pinned Fayetteville-Mnalius’ Trent Gloo late in the second period of the consolation bracket final, while Max Naples, edged in the semifinals at 145 pounds by CBA/J-D’s Gerald Vielhauer (the eventual champion), recovered with two wins, was third by pinning Dylan Radcliffe (West Genesee) in 43 seconds.
Judson Ferris finished fourth at 160 pounds, an effort Korben Haney matched at 285 pounds. Brandon Levin, also wrestling at 145, beat C-NS’s Sean Aldrich 6-2 for fifth place, with Fred Pickard sixth at 215 pounds.
