Poetry Reading with Georgia Popoff
Sunday, April 18
2-3 PM, virtual via Zoom
Georgia Popoff, poet, educator, and current Workshops Coordinator with the Downtown Writers Center of the Syracuse YMCA will hold a reading from her latest book of poetry, Psychometry, via Zoom. The reading will be followed by a commentary on the work and a Q&A session. Published shortly before the pandemic shutdown, Psychometry is a collection of four cycles of poems: Psychometry, Epistle, Voice, and I Am. You can learn more about Popoff’s career and her previous works at her website.
Free. Registration is required. Click here to register directly through Zoom so you can receive your meeting invitation. You will need a smartphone, tablet, or computer to participate.
If you don’t think you like “modern” poetry, do yourself a favor and read this collection. Each of the four cycles is captivating and accessible. “Psychometry” writes from the perspective of various inanimate objects belonging to famous women: Janis Joplin’s cowbell, Emily Dickinson’s inkwell, Imelda Marcos’ engagement ring (no, not her shoes). “Epistle” is letters as poetry. “Voice” is an homage to women who had to publish anonymously or pseudonymously or not at all because of their gender. “I Am” is a collection of introspective first-person poems.

The Up Side of Downs
Zoom discussion with author Lisa Palermo Matto
Monday, May 3, 7-8 PM
Local author Lisa Palermo Matto put the pandemic year to great use by compiling just some of her family’s most tender, humorous, and at times nerve-wracking stories of life with their daughter Marlee. Born with Down Syndrome, Marlee demonstrated from an early age that she was not to be confined, defined, or limited by the presence of an extra chromosome. From her adventurous childhood to her acceptance into Syracuse University’s InclusiveU program, Marlee’s story shows readers how one family and its community have been brought closer by the life of this amazing young woman.
Join us to learn more about the Matto family’s experiences, what it was like writing such a personal story, and how important community and social networks are to people living with Down Syndrome and to their families.
The Up Side of Downs is available for borrowing at Maxwell, and is for sale on Amazon.com.
The program is free; registration is required. A computer, tablet, or smartphone is needed to attend this virtual event. Register here through Zoom to receive the meeting link.
