Baltimore Woods Nature Center announces exciting programs for nature enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy in February with details listed below.

Science Adventures in Nature           , Feb. 2 to  Feb. 23,, 1 to 4 p.m.

For ages 5-13; Cost: $30 members; $45 public

This three-week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. On Tuesdays, we’ll meet up for a three-hour program packed with experiments, activities, and outdoor exploration. Rain, snow, or sunshine – we will happily go outside!  Program runs 2/2, 2/9, and 2/23. Pre-registration is required, and all three sessions are included in this price. Trail Schools: February Exploration, Feb. 4 to Feb 25 from 1 to 4 p.m.

For ages 5-13; Cost: $30 members; $45 public

Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century, Enos Mills, each excursion will take us on an adventure as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats, including streams, forests, wetlands, beaver ponds, and open meadows. This three-week series runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. 2/4, 2/11, and 2/25. Pre-registration is required; price includes all three weeks. Weekly themes include finding foxes, going on a forest bumble, and trekking the overlooks, fields, and forests of the preserve.

Meet the Artist: A Live Zoom Session with Diane L. Menzies, Feb. 4 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Recommended for ages 15 and up; Cost: $10 members; $15 public per device log-in

Join Jamesville artist Diane L. Menzies for an intimate exploration of Woodlands and Water: Paintings of Meaningful Places, a nature-inspired collection of oil paintings on display at Baltimore Woods Nature Center. Led by art-gallery coordinator Karen Jean Smith, participants will get an up-close look at a few of the featured oil paintings, learn more from Diane about the inspiration and process behind the work, and share their own personal stories or experiences that Diane’s artwork inspires. Artists and nature-lovers alike will enjoy learning more about the artistic process and engage with this collection in a unique way. Attendees are encouraged to view the virtual gallery, now available on the Baltimore Woods website.

Superlative Life: An Online Video Program

Available to view Feb. 5 to Feb. 26

For ages 5 and up; Suggested donation: $10 per household

The great naturalist Edwin Way Teale wrote that winter is a time of superlative life. The abilities of plants and animals to survive the cold Central New York winters are varied and astounding. Follow along as Naturalist Tom Meier sets forth to understand the adaptations and drive of winter wildlife in a time when giving up is not an option.

Winter Birding Basics, Feb. 6 from 10 to noon.

For ages 8 and up; Cost: $6 – $9

Bare branches and fewer birds make for the perfect time to learn the basics of birdwatching. We’ll grab binoculars and set out onto the preserve to hone our skills and discover how special winter bird watching really is. We will go for a short hike, please come dressed for the weather. Pre- registration is required and due to limited capacities associated with the pandemic, walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

School Break Nature Adventure Day Camp, Feb. 15 to 9, 9 to 3 p.m.

For children in grades K-8; Cost: $207 per child/week includes all fees

Ready for a break from school? A week at Baltimore Woods is just what you need! Come to camp for full-day adventures outside, in the woods, hiking, exploring, and playing in the Baltimore Woods Nature Camp tradition. Family membership required. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited.
