Marcellus food pantry open to residents
Anyone who lives in the Marcellus school district and needs food is welcome to shop the Marcellus Ecumenical Food Pantry in the First Presbyterian Church of Marcellus.
The church is located at the corner of Main and North streets, with the food pantry entry on North Street. The purpose of the Marcellus Ecumenical Food Pantry Emergency Food Service is to meet the needs of individuals and families by providing quality nutritious food.
“During these times of layoffs and sickness, we’re opening up the food pantry to those who may have a temporary need,” said Sue March, co-manager.
Maureen Germain is manager of the food pnatry.
The CNY Food Bank’s distribution guidelines say that clients may select canned items, baking supplies, fresh and frozen produce, frozen meat, grains and beans and cheese among other goods.
During the pandemic, clients may shop once a week instead of the usual every other week. Although the pantry doesn’t require certification of finances, clients are asked to complete a simple form that lists financial guidelines.
“If the need is there, you are welcome to food. There’s no one to contact nor any need to call ahead,” March said. “If you need food, just come.”
Hours of operation are Tuesdays, 11 to noon and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
One person per family shops using a sanitized cart. Staff helps clients with frozen and refrigerated food selections.
“You must wear a mask and gloves. Gloves are supplied by the food pantry, if needed,” said March, adding that only one shopper at a time is allowed in the pantry; clients are asked to be considerate of those waiting their turn.
Housebound customers should call 315-673-2201 if they need assistance.
The pantry is supported by the churches in the Marcellus school district, school, community, and civic organizations, and the CNY Food Bank, as well as individual donations of money and goods.
Donations of non-perishable and non-expired food may be dropped off at the First Presbyterian Church of Marcellus at the North Street entrance.
Place donations in the yellow container located just inside the double glass doors, 8 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
About 60 volunteers unload the CNY Food Bank delivery truck, stock shelves, and help customers with food selections.
