… the Skaneateles Press published an article inviting students to join the Skaneateles Envirothon team, where they competed in a national academic competition focused on the environment and the earth. At the time, the Skaneateles team was run by the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation Society, and although the competition was national, only nineteen states participated. Currently, the team is run by Mr. Garrett, the Skaneateles High School Biology teacher. The competition now encompasses all of the United States and parts of Canada. If you are a high school student, or know one, interested in the environmental sciences consider joining the team by speaking with Mr. Garrett.

… there was an advertisement for painting lessons to introduce beginners to sketching, painting, watercolors, and oils. This class was taught by Harold Walker, a graduate from Syracuse University. He also offered advanced painting lessons and some ceramics classes at his personal studio on Skaneateles Lake, a perfect place for painting. Supplies for the classes were offered at Walker’s studio at a 10 percent discount for his students. Today, you can take art classes at the Schweinfurth in Auburn, or from Jane Darovskikh who offers local classes in Skaneateles, both provide most of the supplies needed. Classes at the Schweinfurth are offered for adults and kids. Classes range from quilting, ceramics, beginner and advanced art, as well as fashion. All of the information about these classes and how to sign up can be found at schweinfurthartcenter.org. If you are interested in taking classes with Jane Darovskikh you can contact her at 315-209-7368.

… an article was published about the role of women in WWII. It was estimated that 4 million women were working as nurses for the military. At this time the Red Cross was attempting to recruit 36,000 additional registered nurses, along with 100,000 nurse’s aides. The Defense Health and Welfare Services was also hoping to persuade at least 65,000 women to enter schools of nursing. Today, approximately 7,150 women serve in the Army Nurse Corps, a small fraction of the total number of women serving in the military. In fact, millions of women help war efforts not only by nursing but also through fighting in the U.S. Military.
