Fayetteville-Manlius, in its second CNY Coutnies League cross country road meet in as many weeks, went to Oneida Shores last Wednesday to face Cicero-North Syracuse, who is state-ranked on both the boys and girls sides in Class A, yet still could not keep up with the Hornets.
F-M’s girls swept the top 10 against C-NS while sweeping the Northstars and Syracuse East by equal 15-50 margins. Phoebe White, in a time of 19:41.3, earned the individual title as she, along with Megan Menz (19:47.3) and Reilly Madsen (19:49.0), all broke the 20-minute mark on a muddy Oneida Shores course.
Keita Peden ran to fourth place in 20:01 flat, and a group of Hornets followed, with Palmer Madsen, Rebecca Walters (20:02.4 each), Samantha Levy (20:02.5), Claire Walters, Sophia Ryan and Kaitlyn Neal (20:02.6) each close behind. The entire F-M group ran within a half-minute of each other.
In the closer boys race, F-M won 22-39 over C-NS and 18-45 over Syracuse East, though the Hornets were content to see the Northstars’ Andrew Bearkland win the individual race in 16:49.9 before taking over.
Peter Ryan, in 17:26.7, held off Patrick Perr (17:26.9) and Joe Walters (17:27.2) for second place, while Max Perry finished sixth in 17:34.4. Ben Otis led the next group, getting to eighth place in 17:38.3, closely followed by Bryan Geehrer (17:44.0) and Brendan Pearl (17:46.5).
Jamesville-DeWitt has the no. 19 spot in the state Class B rankings, and rolled past Fulton 15-50 last Wednesday, sweeping the entire top 10 as Hannah Butler prevailed in a time of 20:40, nearly half a minute ahead of Megan Brown (21:09) in second place as Sophia Vinciguerra (21:13) finished third.
Alexandra Street got to fourth place, in 22:15, with Amelia Gilbert posting 22:29 for fifth place. Emily Shapiro (22:35), Catherine Keane (22:36), Alisa Sabert (22:39) and Abby Palin (22:39) all were close behind.
That salvaged a split, because J-D’s boys team lost a close 29-30 decision to Fulton only because the Red Raiders claimed the top three positions, led by Ken Deloff (17:47), Isaac Crandall (18:11) and Dan Phillips (18:41), before the Red Rams took over.
Matt Salbert paced J-D, but could only manage fourth place in 18:54. Tyler Glowaki was fifth, in 19:20, just ahead of Lennier Stynes (19:21) and Nick Mannion (19:22), while Chris Blust was eighth in 19:30. Alan Gao (19:39) held off Miles Chandler (19:40) for ninth place.
As that went on, East Syracuse Minoa rolled to a sweep over the Oswego Buccaneers. The girls 15-50 victory included Natalie Marra posting a time of 20:33 to beat the runner-up, Oswego’s Mackenzie Rice (22:40), by more than two minutes.
Meghan Vanderwarker, in third place in 22:43, led the Spartans’ main charge. Sarah Tingley was fourth, in 22:56, with Marina Lopez fifth in 23:15. Yamila Wunsch, in 23:37, beat out Madison Carr (23:40) and Mary Neff (23:41) for seventh place, with Makalia White (23:44) also in the top 10.
In the boys race, where ESM prevailed 23-32 over Oswego, a top-three sweep included Matt Young prevailing in 17:22, with Jared Henry (17:32) and Nick Berg (17:36) close behind. The Bucs’ Christian Davis and Dalton Babcock each finished in 19:06, with Evan James (19:09) close behind, but Jacob Perotta, in seventh place in 19:36, and David Rivers, in 10th place in 20:11, helped the Spartans hang on.
During weekend action, J-D swept to the girls and boys team titles at the Whitesboro Invitational. For the girls Red rams, who won with 46 points to 85 for runner-up Rome Free Academy, Vinciguerra roared to fourth place in 20:34.5, just ahead of Brown (20:42.0) in sixth place. Street was 12th, in 22:27.6, while Palin took 14th place in 22:32.2. Gilbert (23:13.1) and Shapiro (23:14.7) were 17th and 18th, respectively.
The J-D boys edged Syracuse West, 96 points to 98, as Joe Glisson finished 15th in 18:49.4, just ahead of Salbert in 19th (19:00.6) and Mannion in 21st (19:03.9), with James Pieri (19:09.5), Stynes (19:20.8) and Glowaki ( 19:37.9) also notching top-30 finishes.
ESM, meanwhile, went to the McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, where in the Unseeded AA-2 race Marrra, in a time of 17:41 flat, finished second to Clarence’s Katrina Patterson, who won in 17:25.4. Young finished seventh in the boys Unseeded AA-2 race in 15:51.6, with Henry 12th in 16:11.2 and Berg (16:48.0) in 29th place.
