Mention the phrase “50-24” to the Christian Brothers Academy football team any time in the last 12 months, and watch the purple-clad Brothers turn red.
That was the final score when Corcoran came to Alibrandi Stadium a season ago and stunned CBA, setting the stage for a 2014 season that fell way below the program’s high expectations.
Remembering the pain of that night, and thirsting to get even, the Brothers did so in complete fashion Friday night, going to Corcoran and registering 42 first-half points on the way to a 62-12 victory over the Cougars.
Focused and ready from the outset, CBA scored on each of its first seven possessions, never punted once and had things put away by the third quarter, when the starters went to the bench and the score stood 49-6 in the Brothers’ favor.
Playing well on both sides of the ball, CBA saw its defense force three first-half turnovers, including SirVocea Dennis making a one-handed interception and recovering a fumble. All of those takeaways led to points on the other end.
Stevie Scott, who ran 11 times for 138 carries, set the night’s tone when he sprinted 46 yards to the end zone early in the first quarter. After Collin Record scored on a 19-yard run, Scott returned to get his second touchdown on a 15-yard sprint late in the period.
Even when Corcoran did get on the board in the second quarter, it couldn’t swing the momentum. Three more possessions led to three more CBA touchdowns.
Scott found the end zone for the third time on a two-yard run before quarterback Jake Brotzki connected with Tyler Leonard on a nine-yard TD pass and DeAndre Dowdell scored from three yards out.
Before all of the starters exited, Scott tacked on one more TD early in the third quarter on an 11-yard run, with Dennis seeing time under center and also finding the end zone on an eight-yard run.
Brotzki, in his two-plus quarters of work, completed nine of 13 passes for 143 yards, his throws often going to Noah Jordan-Williams, who had three receptions for 69 yards, and Reed Delfavero, who had 67 yards on just two catches.
CBA is back home next Friday to meet surprising Nottingham, who is 3-0 following a 32-20 come-from-behind win over West Genesee, the Brothers knowing a showdown with Liverpool looms on Oct. 2.
Bishop Grimes, 0-2 going into the week, had its first road game of the season at Cato-Meridian on Friday, starting well but unable to sustain it in a 42-15 loss to the Blue Devils.
During the first quarter, the Cobras twice drove to the end zone. Rafael Drummond scored on a 25-yard run, and Jordan Newman threw a 20-yard TD pass to Liam Cavanaugh.
But a series of mistakes in the second period allowed Cato to score 28 unanswered points and take charge. Four different Blue Devils scored touchdowns during that surge, capped by Justin Donnelly’s 51-yard scoring pass to Justin Cook.
