A flurry of league meets among the area’s girls track and field teams reflected the tough competition, with only Solvay prevailing, before weekend events brought much more success, especially for Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge.
The Bearcats beat Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central 103-23. Jordyn Willsey was victorious in the 1,500-meter run and 3,000-meter run, and also claimed the 400-meter hurdles in 1:24.8.
Samantha Waters threw the shot put 30 feet 4 inches, Belle Nieves heaving the discus 86 feet and Katie Harrington clearing 5’2” in the high jump. Serenity Thomas was first in the 400-meter dash in 1:14.1 and the Bearcats also won the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
But Westhill-Bishop Ludden lost, 86-55, to the Cazenovia Lakers, who claimed its fifth OHSL Liberty National division title in six years, though Westhill-Ludden did get some individual titles.
Kathryn Doherty, who was second in the 100 hurdles (17.7 seconds) to Ashley Kent, and Noelle Coolican both cleared 8’6” in the pole vault, while Zoe Fortin, with a leap of 14’11” edged Kent by one inch to win the long jump.
Annibel Coolican needed 1:10.2 to pull away from the Lakers’ Jamie Joseph (1:13.2) and win the 400 hurdles, also pairing with Fortin, Mary Kate Washburn and Noelle Coolican to take the 4×400 relay in 4:20.3 to the Lakers’ 4:22.7.
On her own, Washburn was second in the shot put and third in the 400-meter dash, with Genny Corcoran second (5:04.9) to Clara Rowles (4:53.3) in the 1,500-meter run and again in the 800-meter run, where Corcoran posted 2:30.9 to Rowles’ 2:28.6.
Olivia Dagineau got second place in the 200-meter dash (28.6 seconds) and Isabella Haber second (13.7 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, each of them won by Cazenovia’s Kirsten Underwood. Alaina Kenny took second in the 3,000-meter run in 11:19.4.
Wednesday’s action included Jordan-Elbridge’s 70-69 defeat to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, a meet where the Rebels’ Kylee Bartlett won three times, in the 100 hurdles , 200 sprint and high jump.
As for the Eagles, Rebekah Blonski prevailed in the 100 sprint (13.1 seconds) and long jump, where she flew 16’2”. Theresa Dristle also won twice, taking the 800 (2:34.9) and 3,000 (12:11.0), with Mary Elizabeth Dristle claiming the 1,500 in 5:32.0. Julie Hines won the 400 sprint in 1:02 flat and helped the Eagles finish first in the 4×400 relay.
West Genesee lost, 111-29, to Cicero-North Syracuse, but Carly Benson still managed to win the 1,500 in 4:51.3 and Valerie Pirro took the 400 hurdles in 1:04.1. C-NS’s Javielle Fanizzi won four events – the 100 and 200 sprints, plus the long jump and triple jump.
The weekend saw Marcellus finish third, with 58 points, and J-E get 53 points for fourth place in the Weedsport Invitational, where Jamesville-DeWitt won with 100 points, all after the Eagles’ Abby Gugel finished second in the 1,500 in 4:52.05 at Friday’s John Arcaro Invitational at Baldwinsville.
Blonski, in 16.83 seconds, beat out Fabius-Pompey’s Adelia Alexander (16.91 seconds) to win the 100 hurdles as Abby Fallon finished fifth.
Blonski also won the long jump, going 15’10 ¼” to beat New Hartford’s Emily Steates (15’1 ¾”) by a comfortable margin and, in the 100 sprint final, was a close second (13.70 seconds) to Port Byron’s Olivia Chuttey (13.64 seconds). J-E took third in the 4×100 relay (56.24) and was fifth in the sprint medley relay as Marcellus was fifth in the 4×800.
Marcellus got most of its points in field events. Courtney Otis and Nicole Scalise tied J-E’s Thresa Dristle for second in the pole vault, each of them clearing 6 feet.
Dristle also finished fifth in the 800 behind the Mustangs’ Tori Stopen, who was fourth in 2:34.16. In the 400, Stopen (1:04.34) was third and teammate Kendyll French fifth, with J-E’s Brittany Hares (1:06.81) in between them.
Johanna Sylcox was second in the shot put, throwing it 32’1”, with Meg Blystone (27’1 ¾”) gaining sixth place. Alex Kinsella’s triple jump of 29’ ¾” put her in second place as she, along with Stopen, French and Zoe Higgins, was second (4:35.76) to Moravia (4:33.91) in the 4×400.
