One more full week of regular-season action remained for the Cazenovia boys golf team to pick up victories and get itself tuned up for the championship tournaments that lay ahead.
The Lakers also had an OHSL Liberty division regular-season title in mind, too, and took a large step toward that goal last Wednesday afternoon by knocking off first-place and defending league champion Westhill in a tight 217-219 match at Cazenovia Country Club.
Charlie Schaffner led the way with a 39, matching Westhill’s Andy Vadnais for top round ahead of Vadnais’ teammate, Nate Meisner, who had a 41.
The key to Cazenovia’s victory, though, was how its depth allowed the team to catch up and pass the Warriors. Tim Hunt and Nick Becker both shot 44, tying Westhill’s Sean Dadey, with Cody Thorp and Tyler Modzeleski each posting 45 to clinch it. Trevor Nourse and Brandon Wells had matching rounds of 47.
The Lakers got a solid effort last Monday against Marcellus at CCC, doing enough to record a 213-224 victory over the Mustangs. Thorp, shooting a 39, was the only golfer on either side to break 40. Modzeleski added a 42, the same total as Grant Lewis, who led the Marcellus side.
Moving to girls golf, Cazenovia capped off a busy week by claiming Madison County bragging rights against Chittenango, prevailing 206-237 at Woodcrest Golf Club.
Each of the four lowest round belonged to Lakers golfers, starting with Kelsey Fredericks, who posted a 45 to beat Samanatha Quarantillo’s total of 51. Maleigha Ellithorpe and Erin Howell each shot 55 to help out as Caroline Benn posted a 63.
On the Bears’ side, Rachel Cleary had the best round, a 57, edging out Sara Schmidt and Megan Pierce, who both posted 59. Danielle McConnell finished with a 62.
Before all this, Cazenovia went on the road last Monday afternoon, putting up a good effort at Skaneateles, but still dropping the Laker duel by a 211-220 margin.
Quarantillo nearly snagged the low individual round at Skaneateles Country Club, shooting a 46, just one shot behind Skaneateles’ Grace Magee. But no other Cazenovia player got close to Quarantillo’s total, while Jill Barker, with a 52, helped Magee out.
It was just the Lakers’ fortune to, one day later, meet unbeaten (7-0) CBA at Drumlins, watching as the Brothers posted its lowest total of the season to beat Cazenovia 168-226.
Quarantillo again led her side, posting a 48. Ellithorpe had a 51, with Benn contributing a 57, but they all trailed a strong CBA quartet that included Ellie Baumgartner (38), Annie Caputo (41), Annie Fletcher (44) and Mary Frances Ierlan (45). In Wednesday’s 198-206 defeat to Marcellus, Benn had a 46, with Ellithorpe improving to a 51.
Chittenango’s week started with a 207-235 defeat to Marcellus at Woodcrest. Schmidt led the Bears, posting a 55, just ahead of Cleary (57) and Casey Smith (59), while Nicole Rose had a 64. Mustangs teammates Avery Mordaunt and Mary Colella both finished with 47.
Things didn’t improve in Tuesday’s 209-260 defeat to Skaneateles. Playing at SCC a day after Cazenovia did so, Schmidt paced Chittenango with a 58, while Mia Biviano had a 65, ahead of Smith (70) and Pierce (67). For the Lakers, Magee rolled to a 43.
