When it comes to neighborhood bragging rights in boys track and field, Solvay holds it over Westhill-Bishop Ludden – by the margin of a single point.
The Bearcats beat the Warriors last Wednesday afternoon in a 71-70 thriller, with Solvay earning its margin by claiming four of six field events.
Isaiah Lee unleashed a triple jump of 41 feet 2 inches and had a top long jump of 19’ 1 ½” to spark the Bearcats’ efforts. Dan Hatch cleared 11’2” in the pole vault to beat Westhill-Ludden’s Chris Pullano (10’6”), while Sanford took the discus with a throw of 100’10”.
Moving to the oval, Garrett Lee and Owen Ryan both went 11.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash, with Lee going 23.3 seconds in the 200-meter dash to top Jordan Devereaux (24.8 seconds) and Ryan (24.9 seconds) for another victory.
Jonah Cavallo added a top time of 2:06.6 in the 800-meter run, also running a leg for the Bearcats as it won the 4×400 relay in 3:44.8 with Devereaux, Colton Francemone and Tom Matsyuk taking part. Ryan, Devereaux and the Lees helped Solvay win the 4×100 relay in 46.1 seconds.
On Westhill-Ludden’s side, Xavier Fleurinor edged Garrett Lee, 16.1 seconds to 16.2, in the 110 high hurdles, also winning the 400 hurdles in 1:04.9 over teammate Will Ringwood (1:06.2). Steve Bailey (55.8 seconds) beat Pullano (57.1 seconds0 in the 400-meter dash, while Jordan Roland cleared 6 feet in the high jump and Donovan Whipple threw the shot put 41’1”.
Jordan-Elbridge’s boys track team hosted Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central last Wednesday afternoon, winning that clash of Eagles by a 76-64 margin.
Of the five field events, J-E won three of them. Tyler Jackson had a first-place triple jump of 35 feet 7 ½ inches, while Gunnar Ferris cleared 6’6” in the pole vault and Justin Quinn, winning the discus, heaved it 122’7”.
Though ITC claimed first place in most of the races, Jackson did win the mile for J-E, also helping his side claim the 4×400 relay in 4:13.0. Ethan Kinney needed 12:08 to beat the field in the 3,200-meter run as J-E was first in the 4×800 relay (10:21.5), too.
Marcellus had a close meet with OHSL Freedom division leader Jamesville-DeWitt last Wednesday, and almost got to the front, but lost a 72-69 decision to the Red Rams.
Pat McGuane led a sweep of the distance races for the Mustangs, running the 800 in 2:11.8 and claiming the mile in 5:03.7 as Joe Riccardi ran the 3,200 in 11:06.1. Will Coon added a 400-meter victory in 54.8 seconds and also helped Marcellus’4x400relay team prevail in 3:48.8 as McGuane, Riccardi, Tom Dailey and Ethan Mosure won the 4×800 in 9:19 flat.
The field events were split, the Mustangs having Noah Townsend clear 6’2” in the high jump as James Murphy unleashed a discus throw of 117’8” and Mike Abbott topped 10’6” in the pole vault. Sean Mulvihill led J-D, winning the 100 and 200 sprints, plus the long jump.
West Genesee ran into Liverpool last Wednesday and lost, 108-33, to the Warriors. All of the Wildcats’ victories came in field events, where Evan Tuthill unleashed a top discus throw of 125’ 2 ½”, Patrick Murphy went 17’10 ½” in the long jump and Josh Mattice threw the shot put 43’3 ¾”.
But Liverpool won every single race, seeing Nazir Murphy earn victories in the 110 hurdles (16.8 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:01.5), plus a sweep of the relays.
Marcellus did see Townsend win the high jump at Friday’s New Hartford Invitational, clearing 6 feet with fewer misses than Roland, who settled for second place. Pat McGuane finished sixth in the 800 in 2:04.44.
West Genesee earned 20 points for 11th place, nearly half of them from David Leff running the mile in 4:35.79, trailing only Niskayuna’s Charlie Ragone, who won the race in 4:33.56.
Hunter Buza, Patrick Murphy, Sean Relyea and Vinny Gettino take third in the 1,600 sprint medley relay in 3:52.95. The Wildcats also took fourth in the distance medley relay in 11:31.46. Josh Mattice was fifth (43’11 ½”) in the shot put as Solvay’s Isaiah Lee was fifth (40’8 ¼”) in the triple jump, the Bearcats adding a sixth-place time of 3:45.88 in the 4×400 relay.
J-E meanwhile, went to the Brother Basilian Invitational at CBA. Nathan Hollis (2:04.02) and Russell Hines (2:04.44) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 800, while Hollis cleared 5’6” in the high jump and took second place.
Brad Marshall threw the shot put 39’4” for fourth place, with Quinn heaving the discus 107 feet and also finishing fourth. Zach Rink took fourth (17.31 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles, with Jackson fifth (36’4”) in the triple jump. Kinney was sixth in the 3,200.
