For the second time in April, the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa girls lacrosse teams met up, and again the Red Rams finished on top.
But this contest, a 10-9 decision on J-D’s home field, did not resemble the 9-5 decision the Rams earned against the Spartans back on April 9.
In that first meeting, J-D moved out in front and kept building that lead. In the rematch, though, once the Rams took the lead, the Spartans were bent on keeping pace, and did so, trading goals for a large portion of the contest.
Even so, J-D would hang on as eight different players netted goals. Carly Stone and Riley Burns each scored twice, with Lizzie O’Brien getting a goal and two assists. Caroline Kopp, Ali Durkin, Bess Murad, Jessica Wipper and Katie Lutz also scored goals, with Julia Kelner joining Durkin and Murad in the assist column.
On ESM’s side, Janee DeLuca got two goals and three assists. Ashley Scalzo also found the net twice as Kate McGarity, Brigid McGinley, Cindy Brownson, Jenna Kenney and Natalie O’Brien had one goal apiece. Sydni Eure, playing in goal, earned seven saves, the exact same total as J-D counterpart Maddie Behan.
Two days later, J-D rolled past Oswego 15-5, taking control during a 7-1 second-half push. Stone, with four goals, and Wipper, with three goals, set the pace, while Burns and Lutz had two goals apiece. Kopp, Durkin and Alyssa Phillips had one goal apiece.
But the Red Rams’ win streak ended Saturday with an 18-11 defeat to LaFayette, who got away late after taking an 8-6 halftime lead despite Stone’s four goals. Wipper and O’Brien each scored twice, with Burns, Kopp and Meg Hair getting single goals. Cassidy Doster (six goals, one assist) and Morgan Palmer (four goals) led the Lancers to victory.
On that same day, ESM squeezed past Tully in another 10-9 decision, rallying from a 6-4 halftime deficit with solid defense and a balanced attack where Brownson, Scalzo, McGarity and Olivia McEachron each had two goals, with McGinley and DeLucz both producing a goal and two assists.
Fayetteville-Manlius started a busy week with a 24-4 destruction of Syracuse, setting a season-high total on the scoreboard as the Hornets led 15-1 by halftime.
Jane Cote and Allison Macrae both had five goals, combining for five assists as Mary Trop had four goals and three assists. Amanda Cramer added three goals and four assists, with Grace Bang, Jessica Aspinall and Annalise Sube each scoring twice. Anna Nozynski added a goal as Maya Chiesa and Jamison Seabury had two assists apiece.
Two nights later, though, F-M caught visiting Cicero-North Syracuse in a bad mood and ended up on the wrong end of a 19-9 defeat. Furious at a one-sided defeat to West Genesee two nights earlier, the Northstars overcame a solid Hornets first half to lead, 11-6, at intermission, and pulled away in the latter stages.
Trop still had three goals, with Seabury and Chiesa getting two goals apiece. Cramer had a goal and two assists, while Kincaid got one goal and one assist. C-NS got big nights from Meghan Duffy, who had six goals and three assists, and Hanna Haven and Bryar Cummings, who each got four goals.
Then F-M squeezed out a 7-6 non-league victory over Cazenovia on Saturday, hanging on at the end behind Trop’s three goals and Cote’s two goals and two assists. Kincaid and Seabury also found the net as Macrae and Bang added assists. Each of Aubrey Deveau’s three saves proved important.
Bishop Ludden-Bishop Grimes lost a 9-6 decision to that same Cazenovia team last Tuesday night, staying close throughout the game, but not quite able to make the sustained run it needed against the Lakers.
Jennifer Vazquez scored three times, adding an assist, while Teresa Shattuck had a pair of goals. Emma Driscoll netted the other goal as Meg Farrell recorded 12 saves. Cazenovia got three-goal hat tricks from Grace Milmoe and Olivia McEntee.
Two days later, Ludden-Grimes prevailed over Cortland 15-9, getting away late behind Shattuck’s five goals and five assists. Molly McInerney had a season-best four goals as Vazquez got three goals and two assists. Emma Driscoll added two goals and Kellie Byrne earned a goal and assist.
