Even with a 5-4 mark past the halfway point of the regular season, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team still held the no. 8 state ranking in Class A, an acknowledgement of the brutal schedule it has gone through so far this spring.
Thus, the Bees were glad to have any opportunity it could to earn a lopsided victory, such as last Tuesday’s game against visiting Auburn at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, where B’ville unleashed its attack in a 19-4 victory over the Maroons.
During the first half, the Bees regularly claimed the draws, leading to regular attacks and plenty of production. In fact, the running clock for a double-digit margin was in use by halftime, when the Bees held a 13-2 advantage.
Taylor Gebhardt again led the charge, scoring five times and adding five assists. Marjorie Dehm had a season-best four goals, plus one assist, while Glory Johnson and Alex Leo both contributed three-goal hat tricks.
In support, Peyton Fleming and Sara Goodwin both earned single goals, while Jaclyn Hingre and Julia Pelcher both had assists.
B’ville had a similar showing in Thursday’s game against Syracuse, prevailing 16-2 on Senior Night by blanking Syracuse during a 12-0 first-half surge and cruising the rest of the way.
Again, Gebhardt picked up 10 points, this time from four goals and six assists, and Walker was just as generous, setting a career mark with six assists of her own.
Those passes went to a wide variety of players, starting with Dehm, who scored three times. Leo earned two goals, while Johnson, Fleming, Goodwin, Hingre, Pelcher and Erin Nagle had one goal apiece. Goodwin and Johnson also earned assists.
B’ville could pick up the marquee win it longed for if it could beat Christian Brothers Academy Saturday at Alibrandi Stadium, but it didn’t quite materialize as the Bees took a 12-8 defeat.
The Brothers, who are no. 5 in the state rankings, pushed West Genesee to overtime on April 18 and had knocked off reigning state Class C champion Skaneateles 11-8 earlier in the week. Against B’ville, CBA would not have letdown.
During a competitive first half, the Brothers would double the Bees’ production, eventually gaining a 6-3 lead. It was closer from there, B’ville finding some success against CBA’s defense, but not enough of it to catch up.
Just three different Bees players netted goals – Gebhardt and Johnson each scoring three times, Walker finding the net twice. By contrast, CBA had six different goal-scorers, though Emily Ehle set the pace thanks to her four goals and three assists. In defeat, goalie Julia George made 10 saves.
With a 7-5 overall record, B’ville would play three times in four days this week against Liverpool, Central Square and Brighton before next Tuesday’s regular-season finale against reigning state Class A champion West Genesee.
