Gorgeous spring weather last week was something that every high school athlete enjoyed, and the Cazenovia track and field teams particularly liked it.
The Lakers won both sides of last Wednesday’s OHSL Liberty division meet against visiting Phoenix, prevailing 122-19 on the girls side and also claiming the boys meet by a closer 80-61 margin.
Ashley Kent, on her own, was victorious in the 100 hurdles in 17.3 seconds over Delaney Yates (18.2 seconds), had a top triple jump of 32 feet 5 inches and went 15’1” to win the long jump.
Jamie Joseph also won three times, taking the 400 hurdles in 1:16.1, throwing the shot put 27’3 ½” and matching Tori Fischer in the high jump, clearing 4’8”. Jill Britton and Katie Robbins both cleared 7 feet in the pole vault.
On the oval, Kristen Underwood earned first place in the 100-meter dash (13.8 seconds) and edged the Firebirds’ Katelynn McDonald, 29.1 seconds to 29.2, in the 200-meter dash.
Cazenovia also swept the distance races, from Kaitlyn Rossiter running 800 meters in 2:46.6 to Clara Rowles taking the 1,500-meter run in 5:05.6 to Meggie Hart, second in the 1,500, earning the title at 3,000 meters in 11:07.6.
Hart, Rowles, Maddie Langey and Maria Stalder got through the 4×800 relay in 10:56.5, with Underwood, Kent, Joseph and Yates taking the 4×100 relay (54.9 seconds) as Langey, Rossiter, Stalder and Bailey Forrett won the 4×400 relay in 4:41.1.
Meanwhile, in the boys meet, Cazenovia again turned to Walker Nichols, whose three wins included a high jump clearance of 5’8”, a top long jump of 19’3 ½” and a time of 16.6 seconds in the 110 high hurdles, plus a leg in the 4×100 relay that the Lakers won in 46.2 seconds.
Sweeping the field events, Cazenovia saw Will Kmetz throw the discus 111’3” and Sawyer Hunt toss the shot put 39’1”. Alex Devine was first in the triple jump, soaring 38’8”, and Chris Fisk cleared 10 feet to win the pole vault.
Sean Satchwell joined in with a pair of race victories, starting in the mile, where he posted 4:42.3 and continuing with an 800-meter title in 2:10.8. Brendan Coffey added a first-place finish in the 3,200-meter run in 12:02.6.
Also on Wednesday, Chittenango faced Mexico, defeating the Tigers 74-58 in the girls meet, and Sarah Moon led the way, sweeping all three distance races by running 800 meters in 2:39.4, 1,500 meters in 5:31.3 and 3,000 meters in a time of 12:31.2.

In the boys meet, the Bears lost, 93-48, to Mexico, with Tyler Howard claiming the 110 high hurdles in 17.5 seconds and Isaac Czarnecki winning the 800 in 2:13.3. Wyatt Blanding was first in the 3,200-meter run in 11:23.4, but Mexico swept the field events, Hunter Hellinger leading the way with his wins in the long jump (17’8”) and triple jump (38’9”).
