Just on the strength of its doubles teams, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team nearly upended West Genesee in last Monday afternoon’s match, but could not quite pull off that sweep, leading to a 4-3 defeat to the Wildcats.
None of the Bees’ three singles players – Nick Walker, Scott Ferrari and Chris Dotto – were able to do much against WG’s formidable trio of Brent Boleslav, Garrett Boleslav and Connor McGugian, who lost just three games in six total sets.
Trying to answer in doubles, the Bees saw Austin Dukat and Matt McConaghy beat Aaron Wierbinski and Jobin Purthuparampil 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, with Sam Damato and Mason Soeder taking out James Plunkett and Chris Upwood 7-5, 6-2.
Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini and Griffin Lenkiewicz routed Nate Bentley and J Harter 6-1, 6-0, but Nick Grage and Daniel Mark could not get that fourth point, falling 6-4, 6-1 to Pat Copeland and Drew Francisco.
B’ville did not play again until Thursday afternoon, where it took out Syracuse East 7-0. Working in singles, MacConaghy beat Hein San 6-1, 6-0, with Lenkiewicz beating Muhialdain Muhialdain by those exact same totals. Though Dotto went to three sets, he still managed a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Aung Htoo.
It proved a lot quicker in doubles, with Walker and Mason Soeder beating Richy Llanon and Nick Lozaponi 6-1, 6-1 as Dukat and Ferrari beat Duc Duong and Hein San 6-0, 6-1. Nick Jerome and Kyle Robinson beat Duong and San 6-1, 6-0, with Grage and Mark stopping Yasir Almafrachi and Carlos Echenique 6-2, 6-1.
A day later, B’ville visited Auburn and, looking to improve to 7-2 on the season, did so in a convincing manner, winning all four doubles matches in a 5-2 victory over the Maroons.
It started with Cohen-Ciampichini and Walker beating Jack Farrington and Brian Franceschelli 6-4, 6-2, while Ferrari paired with MacConaghy to stop Trevor Mohannon and Luke Parker 6-2, 6-0.
Damato and Dotto teamed up to stop Brent Debois and Josh Lupo 6-0, 6-4, with Jerome and Mark earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Josh Page and Jake Wanser. In singles, Dukat lost, 6-0, 6-3, to Scott Minnoe, with Soeder falling to Brett Lowe 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, but Lenkiewicz won his singles match in a 6-1, 6-0 romp over Dustin Clark.
B’ville would attempt on Monday to end the long 245-match win streak of Fayetteville-Manlius before facing Liverpool and Central Square later in the week.
