An important week of regular-season action awaited both of the Skaneateles golf teams, especially with the weather finally behaving on a consistent basis – and getting warmer, too.
A second Laker duel took place last Tuesday against Cazenovia, and unlike the first encounter, this time Skaneateles finished on top, edging those other Lakers in a 212-214 decision.
Back when they played on April 20, Skaneateles lost, 213-242, but the rematch barely a week later saw Jake Fontana shoot a 40, one behind Cazenovia’s Trevor Nourse (38) for low individual honors.
With every shot important, Nick Palma had a 42 to trail Cazenovia’s Charlie Schaffner (41) by one, but three Skaneateles golfers – Briggs Carter, Jarrett McDonald and Carter Stregel – had 43 to match Cazenovia’s Cody Thorp. Falso, with a 44, offered further support.
Just before that, Skaneateles met with neighbor and rival Marcellus last Monday at Skaneateles Country Club, and pulled away for a 219-244 victory over the Mustangs. Leading the way, Falso and Jacob Patalino both shot 42 for nine holes.
Falso also took the lead role on Wednesday, when Skaneateles ripped past Solvay 210-259 at SCC. Thanks to his round of 40, Falso finished six shots better than the Bearcats’ duo of Jon Smolen and Colby Skrupa.
Two days later, Skaneateles got past Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 224-300. It included Palma posting a 40 to edge past Falso’s total of 41 as Patalino finished with a 43.
Even a great round from Grace Magee could not help the Skaneateles girls team knock off unbeaten Jamesville-DeWitt last Monday afternoon, the Lakers falling to the Red Rams 189-213.
Competing at Butternut Creek, Magee shot a 36, easily outdistancing all of her teammates. J-D countered with a more balanced approach, seeing Jung-Hye Kim shoot a 43 and Alanna Jones post a 44 to get the Rams in front for good.
When Skaneateles confronted the other top team in the Onondaga High School League, Christian Brothers Academy, a day later at Drumlins, it took a 172-201 defeat to the Brothers.
Magee could only manage a 48 in this round, one better than Jill Barker, with Addie Gramil adding a 51 and Karah Blair posting a 53. Each of CBA’s top four players beat those marks, with Mary Frances Ierlan shooting a 41 ahead of Elisabeth Kip (43), Ellie Baumgartner and Annie Fletcher (44 each).
