Whatever the Baldwinsville softball team may achieve against other Class AA opponents, it’s increasingly clear that, in order to grab an elusive championship, it must find a way past Liverpool.
But that might prove quite difficult, as evidenced by last Monday’s game, where the Bees did a decent job containing the defending Section III Class AA champion Warriors’ potent lineup, but still lost a 5-0 decision.
Two aces were in the pitcher’s circle – Keeana Wolcik for B’ville, Peyton Bellrose for Liverpool. Fresh off a 13-strikeout effort against Cicero-North Syracuse on April 16, Wolcik would limit the Warriors to six hits and earn six strikeouts by game’s end.
Still, Liverpool got to Wolcik for a run in the first inning and two-run rallies in the third and fifth frames. Alicia Hansen had three of the Warriors’ six hits, including a triple, scoring twice and finishing with three RBIs.
Meanwhile, B’ville continually tried to solve Bellrose, but had just four hits of its own, two of them by Brooke Carlisle, including a double. Emma Bernet and Sarah Lalla had the other hits, but Bellrose preserved the shutout by recording eight strikeouts against just one walk.
Wet weather postponed Tuesday’s game against Fayetteville-Manlius, but the Bees did play in Friday’s sub-freezing temperatures against Auburn and never were able to warm up, taking an 8-1 defeat to the Maroons.
Auburn put up runs in five of the seven innings, with Ally Nicolisi twice connecting for home runs and finishing with three RBIs. Jillian Dunn scored B’ville’s lone run in the bottom of the third, but Dunn, Brooke Carlisle and Elizabeth Johns had the lone hits off Maroons pitcher Taylor Stearns, who earned seven strikeouts.
B’ville visits hot-starting Central Square on Monday and takes on West Genesee next Thursday afternoon.
