No matter what took place in the annual track and field clashes between Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon, the home teams ended up happy.
It was the boys Warriors who would prevail at LHS Stadium, sweeping all three relays and getting enough from the other events, too, to defeat to the Northstars 81-60.
Liverpool got going in the 4×800 when Ben Petrella, Dylan McCarthy, Spencer Schulz and Nick LeClair took it in a time of 9:00.5. Donald Frost, Peter Gonzalez, Brandon Mayfield and Nazir Murray won the 4×100 in 46.7 seconds, with LeClair, Dan Muldoon, Collin Gwilt and Jacob Rowell going 3:33.8 in a swift 4×400 relay.
Petrella, on his own, won twice, going 4:31.3 to take the mile and adding a 3,200-meter title in 9:42.2. Muldoon was first in the 400-meter dash in 51.4 seconds, with Frost needing 11.7 seconds to win the 100-meter dash and David Lewis clearing 12 feet in the pole vault.
C-NS countered with its strength in field events, starting with Ross Mathewson, who threw the discus 111 feet 10 inches and added a top shot put throw of 44’4”. George Reader also won twice, going 19’9” in the long jump and 39’10” to claim the triple jump.
However, the Northstars won just two races, both of them by Ed Mahana, who went 16.2 seconds in the 110 high hurdles and also was victorious in the 400 hurdles in 59.9 seconds.
Meanwhile, at Bragman Stadium, it was C-NS getting the best of the girls meet, using strength in distance running and throwing events to hold off Liverpool 76-64.
Jilliann Norris ran 1,500 meters in 5:13 flat, winning that event, and then was followed by Annia Marullo getting first place in the 3,000-meter run in 11:55. C-NS also was victorious in the 4×800 relay in a time of 10:07 and had Cassandra Baldwin take the 100 hurdles in 17.2 seconds.
All told, the Northstars won four of six field events, including the shot put, where Destiny Monica threw it 33’6”, and the discus, where Gianna Garcia had a top throw of 79’9”. Lauren Witek added a victory in the triple jump, going exactly 31 feet.
Liverpool countered with a sprint sweep, from Melanie Anaya taking the 100 in 12.18 seconds to Kristina Moore going 27.10 seconds in the 200 and Yasmeen Griffin winning the 400 sprint in 1:02.9. Ore Akinpelu added a 400 hurdles title in 1:11 flat.
Morgan Chewning-Kulick went 2:41.0 in the 800-meter run and finished first. Also for the Warriors, Kelly Townley cleared 9 feet in the pole vault and Meghan Milazzo topped 4’10” in the high jump, and the Warriors won the 4×400 relay in 4:19.3.
