At the start of a tough slate of CNY Counties League meets, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool track and field teams had completely different results.
While the Northstars dominated against Baldwinsville on Wednesday afternoon, the Warriors were swept by Fayetteville-Manlius, including a 94-47 decision in a hotly contested boys meet.
The quartet of George Reader, Ed Mahana, Andrew Bearkland and Matt Kilian were at the forefront for the C-NS boys team in its 97-39 victory over B’ville at Bragman Stadium.
Reader, when he went 19 feet 7 inches in the high jump, began a sweep of three field events where he unleashed a top triple jump of 40’9” and cleared 5’6” to win the high jump.
Mahana followed up a victory in the 110 high hurdles (15.4 seconds) by going 1:00.5 in the 400 hurdles, while Bearkland ran the mile in 4:50.8 and added a 3,200-meter title in 10:36.4.
Kilian took the 100-meter dash in 11.4 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23.4 seconds, with Jared George victorious in the 400-meter dash (52.6 seconds). Tyler Mosher threw the shot put 43’6”, with Logan Lickfield getting first place in the discus with a throw of 113’9”. Ryan Bristow managed to clear 11 feet in the pole vault.
Meanwhile, in the boys meet between Liverpool and F-M, some inroads were made by the Warriors, such as Brandon Mayfield sweeping the 100 (11.9 seconds) and 200 (24.3 seconds) sprints as David Lewis cleared 11’6” in the pole vault and Mychael Harvey threw the discus 85’5”.
But that paled next to F-M’s efforts, which featured Kyle Barber winning the 400 hurdles in a blistering 51.1 seconds as he also won the 400 sprint (50.7 seconds) and the 800. Bryce Millar took the mile (4:21.1) and 3,200, with Parker Noble victorious in the long jump and triple jump.
C-NS beat B’ville 110-22 in the girls meet at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, winning all but one event, including a sweep of the field competition.
Javielle Fanizzi went 14 feet 9 inches in the long jump and 29’5” in the triple jump, while Whitney Hotchkiss cleared 7’6” in the pole vault. Kierrah Butler’s top shot put throw of 30’10” was followed by Nicole Herringshaw heaving the discus 75’5”.
On the track, Jilliann Norris went 5:24.4 for first place in the 1,500-meter run and ran 800 meters in 2:34.2 for another victory. Sasha Pulaski won the 100-meter dash in 12.8 seconds.
Brittany House went 1:13.9 to prevail in the 400-meter hurdles, with Katherine LeRoy first in the 400-meter dash in 1:04.4. Taylor Parry beat the field in the 3,000-meter run in 11:42.8.
The girls meet, where Liverpool lost, 108-33, to F-M, mostly saw the Hornets dominate distance events and sweep the relays.
But Ore Akinpelu, who signed her letter of intent to attend Northeastern University in Boston earlier in the week, did break through in the 400-meter hurdles, going under a minute to win that race in 59.8 seconds. Danelle Sims added a victory in the 200-meter dash in 27.8 seconds.
Kelly Townley, clearing 9 feet, won the pole vault, with Meghan Milazzo topping 4’10” for first place in the high jump. F-M featured Christabel Ezidiegwu taking the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump, with Olivia Ryan claiming the 400 and 800-meter runs.
