Already with a fifth straight Section III Class B girls championship tucked away, the Cazenovia indoor track and field teams returned to Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena to seek more glory – and found it, too, only now it was the boys team finishing on top.
The boys Lakers gained that glory by winning the Division II portion of the Onondaga High School League meet Wednesday night, beating nine other teams – including Skaneateles, who had topped them in the sectional meet a week earlier.
With 112 points, Cazenovia held off Skaneateles, who had 106 points, getting contributions from all kinds of athletes, especially Walker Nichols, who won three times.
Nichols got going in the 55-meter hurdles, prevailing in 8.01 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of the field that included Sam Langan (9.08 seconds) in sixth place. Then, in the long jump, Nichols went 20 feet 2 ½ inches, the same as Onondaga’s Keanan Glod, but earning the full points.
To top it off, Nichols was the only competitor in the high jump to clear 6 feet, four inches better than Skaneateles’ Eli Goodell (5’8”), who settled for the runner-up spot.
Going 1-2 in the triple jump, Cazenovia saw Casey Fenton prevail with a top leap of 40’2 ¼”, while Alex Devine was second, going 38’11”.
Sean Satchwell won twice in distance events. During the 1,000-meter run, Satchwell posted 2:44.70 and pulled away from Jordan-Elbridge’s Tyler Jackson (2:51.74) to prevail.
Later in the meet, would beat the field in the 600-meter run, his time of 1:28.13 well clear of Tully’s Kyle Berardi (1:29.93) in second place. Brendan Coffey gained fifth place in the mile in 5:08.06 as he, along with Satchwell, Austin Koennecke and Cooper Holgate, were fifth in the 4×800 relay.
Fenton, paired with Langan, Alec Boone and Dylan Hahn, finished second (1:41.35) to Skaneateles (1:38.65) in the 4×200 relay. Hahn, Koennecke, Boone and Ryan O’Herien got to third (3:53.06) in the 4×400 relay as Langan got fourth place (41.05 seconds) and Boone was sixth (41.50 seconds) in the 300-meter dash.
Devine also took second place in the 55-meter dash in 7.08 seconds, just behind Skaneateles’ Tommy Hagen (7.00 seconds), while O’Herien was fifth in 7.27 seconds. Sawyer Hunt finished third in the shot put with a throw of 39’11”, while Jimmy McPherson was fourth in the 3,200-meter run.
In the OHSL Division I event, Chittenango finished sixth, with 39 points, including Mike Capeling’s win in the 3,200 as, in a time of 10:09.77, he was well clear of Westhill-Bishop Ludden’s Garnet Remillard (10:23.91) and the field that included teammate Will Blanding (11:05.99), who was fifth.
Right after that, Isaac Czarnecki, Phillip Abell, Ward Beley and Nick Stanton got together and gave the Bears a victory in the 4×400 in 3:49.99, with Westhill-Ludden (3:55.41) again in second place.
Czarnecki was third in the mile in 4:50.01, while Stanton got to third place in the 300 in 39.84 seconds. Abell took sixth in the 600 in 1:36.41. Beley, Czarnecki, Capeling and Abell went 9:11.60 to finish fourth in the 4×800 as Stanton took ninth in the long jump.
