Before it went to SUNY-Oswego for this weekend’s Kenneth Haines Memorial Tournament, the Marcellus wrestling team took care of one more bit of OHSL Liberty division business.
The Mustangs, who sit in first place in the league standings, stayed there by romping past Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central 64-9 on Tuesday night.
At 138 pounds, Zach Ruggles got it started by pinning the Eagles’ David Villegas midway through the third period. After Tristan Duger (145 pounds) took a 3-1 defeat to Naseem Fielder, Nick Distefano, at 152 pounds, beat Deondre Paul in an 18-1 technical fall.
Four straight decisions followed, all won by the Mustangs, starting with Dan Tierney (160 pounds) edging Tyler Carbonaro 3-2. Nate Long (170 pounds) had an easier time of it, claiming an 8-1 victory over Naujalic Walker, while Nate Lukins, at 182 pounds, had to go to overtime to beat Nahjir Dean 8-4.
Kevin Morrissey, at 195 pounds, ended the string with a 17-7 victory over Esrayel Flowers, and after Garrett Furnia lost at 220 pounds to ITC’s Victor Palmer-Ortiz, Marcellus didn’t lose again.
Five of the remaining seven bouts were forfeits to Cahal Donovan (99 pounds), Alex Czerniak (106 pounds), Jack Santariello (113 pounds), Riley Donovan (120 pounds) and Sam Rice (126 pounds), but Alex Popov did wrestle at 285 pounds and took just 40 seconds to pin Devinear Mason. Ben Hood (132 pounds) ended the meet with a 16-8 victory over Mekhi Shepherd.
Jordan-Elbridge also wrestled last Tuesday, falling to Chittenango 47-18. Each of the Eagles’ three victories were forfeits claimed by Jessi Tripp (106), Alex Parkolap (120) and Brian Rowley (170), but the Bears won all five of the contested bouts.
