In a one-sided manner, the Cazenovia wrestling team emerged from the Dec. 20 Groton Duals with a first-place finish, easily casting aside five different opponents on the way to the top of the standings.
Against the host team, Groton, the Lakers prevailed 60-19, but that was just the start. Cazenovia roared past Southern Cayuga 81-6, handled Moravia 71-9, had no trouble with Lansing in a 63-23 victory and, to top it off, routed Marathon 78-7.
Six different Cazenovia wrestlers had 5-0 marks in the meet, including Jacob Wells (99 pounds), Will Shephard (120 pounds), Alex Curr (170 pounds), John Nannery (182 pounds), Dan Phillips (220 pounds) and Hayden Polhamus (285 pounds).
At the same time, Will Khalill (113 pounds), Matt McLaughlin (126 pounds), Zack Maxwell (132 pounds), Paul McLaughlin (138 pounds) and Alex Nannery (160 pounds) managed four victories apiece, with Sam Deleon (106 pounds) and Billy Heselden (138 pounds) each getting three victories.
Chittenango’s wrestlers, who took part in the Cuneen-Doane Tournament at Walton on Dec. 20, was back in OHSL Liberty division action three nights later, facing Jordan-Elbridge and rolling to a 47-18 victory over the Eagles.
Several matches were not contested, but of those that were, the Bears won four of them, including Wyatt Blanding, at 138, recording a pin over J-E’s Logan Schwarting in one minute, 21 seconds.
Justin Cox, at 285, took just 1:37 to pin Lester Bozeat, while Connor Fredericks (160 pounds) finished off George Richardson in 2:15. Yet another pin went to Antonio Cutrie, at 220, who earned his fall over Sam Everett in 3:13.
Forfeits also got credited to Alex Miller (132), Matt Bixby (145) and Isaiah Prado (195) as the Bears would now rest until it appears at the Fallen Heroes Touranment at Canastota on Jan. 2 and 3. Earlier that week, Cazenovia takes part in the Brett Dixon Memorial Duals at Central Square.
