Though both of the Skaneateles ice hockey teams entered the week undefeated, only one of them would end that way. And it was the boys Lakers taking the honor, earning its second consecutive shutout when it beat Whitesboro 3-0 Friday night at Whitestown Community Center. The win not only propelled Skaneateles to a 4-0 record, it also set up quite a showdown atop the Division II American Conference this Wednesday night at Allyn Arena, when the Lakers meet 5-0 CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt. Face-off is at 7 p.m. Skaneateles was supposed to have its home opener last Tuesday, against Cortland-Homer, but weather postponed it, meaning it was time to go back on the road for a long venture, this tone to Whitesboro. And once again, the Lakers proved itself as worthy road warriors, though it took a while to take over. It was 0-0 until the second period, when Skaneateles got on the board and solved Warriors goalie Tim Evans, who still made 33 saves. Needing a cushion, the Lakers put in a pair of insurance goals in the third period. Briggs Carter, with two assists, and Owen Kuhns, with one goal and one assist, anchored a well-balanced attack where Raymond Falso and Cullen McGlynn also found the net. Patrick Major and Trey Wirth got into the assist column, too, and a stingy Lakers defense, who had blanked Webster Thomas 2-0 exactly one week earlier, again kept the opposition off the board, holding Whitesboro to 13 shots, all of them stopped by Kyle Oschner. Meanwhile, the Skaneateles girls team, who had streaked to a 3-0 start, got slowed down in last Thursday night’s game against Alexandria Bay at Austin Park Pavilion, taking a 2-1 overtime defeat to the Purple Ghosts. Head coach Mike Major had said prior to the game that, while his team’s defense had proven sharp from the outset, its offense still had to find some consistency. The game against Alex Bay proved that point. Neither side scored in either of the first two periods, with Skaneateles constantly thwarted by Purple Ghosts goaltender Kayla McCabe and her 21 saves. Then, even when the Lakers got on the board in the third period, Alex Bay answered, and then tacked on an overtime tally to pull off the win. Miranda Kolb and Emily Rose had the Ghosts’ goals, while McCabe picked up an assist, as did Hayley Aubertine. Skaneateles would go on the road to work on cranking up that attack, visiting Oswego Tuesday and playing a tournament in Albany this weekend before a 12-day break during the holidays. The Lakers are not home again until Jan. 2, when it meets Beekmantown in a rematch of last season’s state semifinal.
