In terms of building confidence, the schedule did not do the Baldwinsville boys basketball team many favors. A week after a season-opening Dec. 5 defeat to Bishop Ludden, the Bees, for its first road assignment of the winter, had to go face another perennial power, Henninger – who, like the Gaelic Knights, would prove too much to handle, B’ville taking a 79-58 defeat to the Black Knights. Unlike B’ville, who had only played once, Henninger had jumped out to a 3-0 start, claiming tight wins over CBA and Troy at its own Peppino’s Invitational on Dec. 5-6 and, earlier in the week, going to Cicero-North Syracuse and beating the Northstars 67-49. At the outset, none of this, nor Henninger’s home-court advantage, intimidated the Bees, who hit plenty of long-range shots in a back-and-forth first quarter and only trailed, 22-20, at the end of it. The getaway started in the second period, Henninger’s pressure leading to B’ville turnovers and baskets on the other end until the Bees stared at a 45-31 halftime deficit. For the rest of the night, B’ville offered chase, seeing Tim Marshall put up 19 points and Devyn McLeod 11 points as Cameron Skipworth (seven points) and Ryan Kohutanich (six points) lingered close behind. The Black Knights stayed in front, though, with ideal offensive balance. Senior point guard Romero Collier led with 15 points, but three others – Shaitique Blatche, Destin Blunt and Oray Gayle – each finished with 14 points. B’ville would go for that elusive win again Tuesday night, at Fayetteville-Manlius, before visitng West Genesee on Friday night and hosting Cicero-North Syracuse next Monday.
