That spark the Skaneateles girls volleyball team received from its hard-fought, down-to-the-wire, five-set win over neighbor and rival Marcellus on Oct. 11 endured into the following week’s action.
When the Lakers took on Hannibal last Tuesday night, it put together its most dominant performance of the season, wiping out the Warriors in a 25-8, 25-9, 25-21 sweep.
More than a full set’s worth of points – 26 in all – came from aces, and Anna Smith had nine of them, also picking up 10 assists, four kills and three digs.
Kelsey Farrell, Bailey Herr and Shannon Roberts each finished with three kills. Allie Baldwin had three kills and two aces, with Emily Baldwin and Margaret Canty getting two aces apiece. Kelsey Kraetz, Emma Goodell and Shannon Foehl each gained two kills.
Two nights later, facing Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central, the Lakers earned another sweep, handling the Eagles by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-10.
Laura Wolford picked up three kills and three aces, while Canty, Farrell, Foehl, Bella Falcone and Mallory Davis each finished with a pair of aces. Goodell got most of the work on the back line, earning 13 assists, with Smith managing four assists. Davis got four digs and Baldwin three digs.
Suddenly, Skaneateles could make its way into the post-season, though it requires wins over Homer next Tuesday and Solvay next Thursday night, neither of which will prove easy.
