Sidewalk construction is on the horizon for the town of Van Buren.
The town board at its July 1 meeting authorized Supervisor Claude Sykes to carry out an intermunicipal agreement with Onondaga County where the county will provide the town $105,000 via a financial assistance grant towards highway-related projects, which includes sidewalks. The primary project for the town will be adding sidewalks on Downer Street.
The first phase of this project will begin at the village Line at Wilkinson Place and run approximately 1,500 feet to the main entrance for River Mall on the north side of Downer Street, which is a county road in this area, Sykes said. The project is expected to be completed no later than mid-September.
“The town board feels that due to the heavy pedestrian and power wheelchair use in this area that this project was very significant from a public safety standpoint,” Sykes said.
Sykes estimates about $50,000 will remain after the sidewalk construction for use toward road repairs.
The Van Buren Town Board will next meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Van Buren Town Hall, 7575 Van Buren Road in Baldwinsville. To view the board meeting, check out the PAC-B TV schedule on page 12 or to obtain a DVD copy, call 638-2768.
