If you’re looking to beat the heat, you can lock yourself somewhere air-conditioned — or you can get outside and into the water.
The northern suburbs offer a number of swimming holes to help you beat the heat, from sandy beaches to public pools. Read on to find one in your area.
Town of Cicero:
Oneida Shores. This Onondaga County park, located at 9400 Bartell Road, Brewerton, features a sandy waterfront with a guarded swimming area, as well as a section for inflatables, a bathhouse and a children’s playground. There are also six picnic shelters and a boat launch. Visitors can also rent a one- or two-person kayak for $10 an hour or a kids’ power paddler for $3 per half hour or $5 an hour.
The beach is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday and noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday until Aug. 17, as well as 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24. Admission is $7 per vehicle ($35 per bus) or $2 per vehicle for seniors. Active military and veterans get in free.
The boat launch can be accessed for $10 per launch for personal crafts ($5 for seniors and during the off-season).
The park also offers a season pass, available at $50 per vehicle for county residents and $75 per vehicle for non-residents (seniors 62 and over pay $21 per vehicle). Season passes are also available for the boat launch at $100 per trailer. Season beach passes are also good at Jamesville Beach, and boat passes are also good at the marina at Onondaga Lake Park.

Joseph F. William Memorial Park and Beach. This town park, known more colloquially as Williams Beach, is located at 7033 Lakeshore Road, Cicero. It includes a gazebo, playground, pavilions and grills. Lifeguards are on duty to monitor swimmers in the shallow areas of Oneida Lake. There’s also a boat launch and fishing spot. Town of Salina:
There are four public pools in the town of Salina, located at:
Duerr Park, Duerr Road, Liverpool.
Richfield Park, Richfield Boulevard, Mattydale.
Sehr Park, Marsden Road, Liverpool.
Wemesfelder Park (formerly Electronics Park), Larkin Street, Liverpool.
The pools provide swimming lessons to town residents all summer long. Children must be 5 years of age by the beginning of the session for which they are being registered. The program is open to residents only. Residents pay $10 for one child, $15 for two or $25 for three per session for 10 half-hour lessons. Lessons are offered from 9 a.m. to noon during July and August.
The pools are also available for open swim during the day. This service is free for residents, who must provide photo ID and proof of residence. Non-residents pay $2 per day for adults and $1 per day for children under 18. The pools are open from noon to 6:45 p.m. seven days a week; they’ll remain open until Aug. 17.

Village of North Syracuse:
Kennedy Park. Located at 114 Grove St., North Syracuse, this village park includes a swimming pool, as well as picnic areas, pavilions, a playground, a volleyball court, softball field and an outdoor historical museum. Use of the pool is free for residents; non-residents pay $3 a day. Non-residents also have the option of purchasing a season pass for $50 per person or $100 per family.
