Utilizing its depth and versatility to full effect, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls track and field team emerged with the Section III Class A-1 championship Wednesday afternoon at Fulton, pulling away from two sets of Spartans, New Hartford and East Syracuse-Minoa – to get that top spot.
All told, the Red Rams picked up 150 points, with ESM not quite able to match New Hartford’s point total and, with 88 points, settling into third place as New Hartford got 93 points.
Patrece Martin gave J-D a pair of wins in field events. Martin, with a triple jump of 35 feet 8 1/4 inches, beat out ESM eighth-grader Mia Montgomery, who was second with 34’4 1/2″. The long jump was closer, but Martin earned a top leap of 16’5″ to edge New Hartford’s Maya Hammonds (16’3 1/2″) as Montgomery setttled for fifth place.
In the discus, the Rams went 1-2 as Tangela Hightower threw it 93’11” and Jesenia Haynes answered with 92’10”, with ESM’s Jelyssa Davis (80’5″) and Francesca Mastrobattisto in the third and fourth spots, respectively. Hightower added a third in the shot put (29’1 1/2″) behind teammate Salwa El Hindi, who was second with a toss of 30’7″. Davis took fourth place with 28’2 3/4″.
Yet another J-D sweep took place in the pole vault, where Brooke DeRoberts won by clearing 9 feet and Sara Signorelli was second with 7’6″, ahead of ESM’s Alexis Bennik (7 feet) in third place.
Moving to the oval, Martin helped Mackenzie Maxam, Adobea Abdo and Alexia Carr as J-D, in 52.99 seconds, won the 4×100 relay, holding off Indian River (53.27 seconds) as ESM was fifth in 54.54 seconds.
Also for the Rams, Elena Haarer, in 2:22.68, edged past ESM’s Juliette Miller (2:24.55) for the title, with Allison Semmel, in 17.30 seconds, beating Fulton’s Amber DeStevens (17.58 seconds) to win the 100-meter hurdles.
ESM did get the best of J-D in the 4×400 relay as Miller, Natalie Marra, Ciara Short and Megan Vandewarker, in 4:24.27 prevailed over the Rams’ quartet of Haarer, Maxam, Carr and Catherine Keane, who were second in 4:25.78. This followed a 4×800 relay where Marra, Miller, Vandewalker and Brittany Kubecka prevailed in 10:14.15, with J-D (10:40.32) settling for third place.
Not only that, but Marra won two races, taking the 3,000-meter run in 10:42.50, well clear of Whitesboro’s Justyna Wilkinson (10:55.96) at the line, and also victorious in the 1,500-meter run in 5:01.86, with Haarer second in 5:19.71.
Keane contended in the 400-meter dash, taking second place in 1:02.48, edging out Vandewarker, who was third in 1:04.56. Rebecca Fuller was third in the pentathlon with 1,459 points, while Semmel took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.77.
Toria Carter was fourth in the high jump, while Carr took fifth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100-meter dash, and Maxam took sixth in the triple jump. ESM’s Bridget Benz got fifth place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:36.71, with J-D’s Alexandra Street seventh.
A day earlier, CBA competed in the sectional Class B-1 meet at Marcellus and finished sixth out of 10 teams, with 49 points, as Skaneateles (140 points) took the top spot.
Anna Schug led the way, rolling to a victory in the 200 in 25.89 seconds, with South Jefferson’s Skylar Pastor (26.16 seconds) in second place. Schug also was second (58.43 seconds) to Pastor (57.80 seconds) in the 400 sprint, and helped the Brothers win the 4×100 relay in 51.60 seconds, leaving Skaneateles (51.99 seconds) in the runner-up spot.
Skylar Decker gained third place in the 100 hurdles in 17.56 seconds, with Megan Pierce third in the 3,000 in a time of 11:06.52. Nafysa Williams, clearing 4’8”, got third place in the high jump. Gabrielle Schug made it to fifth place in the 1,500 in 5:13.68. Kiana Ferguson was sixth in the 200 in 27.67 seconds.
