All spring long, the Marcellus girls golf team patiently waited through bad weather that delayed the start of the season and limited practice time outdoors.
Then, the Mustangs had to work through a compressed regular-season schedule, with lots of three-team matches and few real opportunities to work on their respective games on their home course at Tuscarora Golf Club.
Somehow, Marcellus made it through this gauntlet with a 10-4 record, and when it ventured to Oneida’s Kanon Valley Country Club for Tuesday’s Section III Division II tournament, it walked away with a sectional team title, posting 438 to fend off Cazenovia, who finished second with 452.
Perhaps it helped the Mustangs’ mood that it had the season’s best conditions – sunshine, pleasant temperatures and a gentle breeze – to deal with, which led to solid play.
Junior Avery Mordaunt shot an 18-hole total of 101, with eighth-grader Mary Colella posting a 103. Sophomore Hannah Abbott managed a 109 as junior Alyssa Green managed a 118. The team’s lone senior, Hollis Abbott, shot 125.
Two other local teams, West Genesee and Westhill, appeared at the sectional tournament, too.
For the Wildcats, Rachel Kavney shot a 97 to tie for 22nd place, while Danielle Schmidt posted a 108. Dori Klein led the Warriors, posting a 110, while Amanda Morrissey finished with a 130. Julia Meisner had a 135 and Gabbie LoCurto had a 150.
