Marcellus girls track and field stars Rachel Garn and Abbie Fallon did not disappoint the fans in their last home appearance, which just happened to be Tuesday’s Section III Class B-1 championship meet.
With Garn and Fallon setting the pace, the Mustangs finished second in the 10-team B-1 field with 97 points, edging out South Jefferson (91 points) for the runner-up spot and trailing only Skaneateles, who won with 140 points just eight days after claiming the OHSL Liberty division meet on this same track.
Back at the league meet, Garn swept the the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter runs. Here, she only ran two of those events, but won them both.
First, in the 1,500, Garn, in four minutes, 58.08 seconds, held off Skaneateles’ Madeline Adams (4:58.91) and Kaitlyn Neal (4:59.80) for top honors. Then, in the 800, Garn again had to win a tight race in 2:25.27, with the Lakers’ Julia Willcox (2:25.80) right behind her.
Garn also helped Tori Stopen, Rickie Mixon and Eliza Bell finish second (10:08.73) to Cazenovia (9:59.14) in the 4×800 relay, leading to eight more points. In the 4×400, Garn, Stopen, Mixon and Zoe Higgins were fourth in 4:22.52.
Fallon beat the field in the 100-meter dash in 13.09 seconds, with teammate M.C. Coon fourth in 13.50 seconds. Then, in the long jump, Fallon’s top attempt of 15 feet 1 ¾ inches held off Solvay’s Victoria Marks, who was second with 15’ ¼”. Fallon also got to third place in the 200-meter dash in 27.17 seconds, where Coon was eighth.
Also, sophomore Johanna Sylcox got a victory in the shot put, her toss of 30 feet 5 ¼ inches topping Holland Patent’s Haley Buczkowski (30’1”) and the field as Suzanna Sylcox (29’4 ¼”) gained fifth place.
On her own, Higgins was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:11.70, where Haley Randall was sixth (1:18.13), and added a fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.91 seconds, also helping the Mustangs take fourth place in the 4×100 relay in 53.83 seconds.
Coon tied with Paige Manahan for fifth in the high jump, each of them clearing 4’6”. Emily Townsend got sixth place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
Solvay’s Courtney Napolitano rose to third place in the pentathlon with 2,154 points, ahead of the Mustangs’ Alex Kinsella in fourth place (2,003 points) and Makenzie Felicia (1,970 points) in fifth place, with the Bearcats’ Belicia Neves sixth. Katie Harrington was fifth in the 800 in 2:36.90.
Jordan-Elbridge, meanwhile, participated in the simultaneous sectional Class B-2 meet, finishing sixth out of 10 teams with 49 points. Clinton rolled to the team title with 155.5 points.
Julie Hines won twice, her time of 1:01.19 in the 400 sprint exactly one second better than Lowville’s Alexis Bach (1:02.19) in second place, before going to the 200 and, in 26.71 seconds, pulling away from Bach (27.63 seconds) again.
As if that wasn’t enough, in the 4×400 relay Hines joined Emily Weichert, Emma Burns and Madi Hatt as, in 4:13.44, the Eagles beat Lowville (4:17.85) by more than four seconds. Also, Hines put up a fifth-place long jump of 15’3 ¾”.
On her own, Weichert gave the Eagles a victory in the 100 hurdles, her time of 17.58 seconds just enough to hold off Clinton’s Alayna Lofgren (17.66 seconds) at the line. Weichert also finished fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.01. Mary-Elizabeth Dristle was fifth in the 2,000 steeplechase in a time of 8:39.20, and went 5:31.76 in the 1,500 to take sixth place.
