Emily Soeder’s latest triumph in the high jump was part of the Baldwinsville girls track and field team’s solid fourth-place finish in Tuesday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Central Square.
All told, the Bees earned 60 points, barely missing third place as West Genesee (61.5 points) took that spot. Everyone ended up chasing Fayetteville-Manlius, who used its dominance in distance running to pile up 145.5 points, with Rome Free Academy (83 points) the runner-up.
The high jump turned into a duel between Soeder and RFA’s Kati Gotch. Though she didn’t get to her career-best effort, Soeder, by clearing 5 feet 3 inches, eased ahead of Gotch, who could do no better than 5’2” on this day.
B’ville did quite well in the relays, and nearly won the 4×400. Katie Wicks, Rachael Miller, Kelley Hull and Marissa Lathrop finished in four minutes, 2.84 seconds, inches behind F-M, who won in 4:02.79 by just 0.05 seconds.
It was just as close in the 4×100, where Cierra Allen, Brittany LaRock, Randi Bort and Rebecca Lawrence pushed Corcoran all the way to the line, with the Cougars, in 50.35 seconds, edged the Bees, who had 50.41 seconds.
Miller challenged the F-M crowd in the 800-meter run and almost conquered them, finishing in 2:17.83 for second place, right behind the Hornets’ Annika Avery, who won in 2:17.63. Lathrop took fifth place in 2:22.33.
Wicks made her individual push in the 400-meter dash, and got to second place in 1:00.05, though she couldn’t catch Corcoran’s Patrice Williams, who won in 57.98 seconds. Lawrence added a fifth-place time of 27.19 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
Mia Bolton took seventh place (8:07.7) in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, but paired with Shylea Dukat, Kirby Socker and Madison Gonzalez to finish fourth in the 4×800 relay in 10:30.92.
Carlie McNamara got third place in the discus, throwing it 92’9”, though it was far back of RFA superstar Mariah Mays, who holds the Section III record in the event and won here with 134’7”.
Kayleigh Sattler, earning 1,619 points, finished sixth in the pentathlon. Brittnay LaRock and Maria Diamond tied for sixth in the pole vault, each of them clearing 8 feet.
Hannah Moyer was seventh in the long jump (14’9 ½”), while Haleigh Jaquint got ninth place (31’7 ½”) in the triple jump. Dominique LaPointe took seventh in the 400 hurdles in 1:11 flat as Liz Wisely was eighth and Hannah Wood 10th in the 100-meter hurdles.
When the B’ville boys track team went to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium for its sectional Class AA meet on Wednesday, it took fifth place, with 65.5 points, while again F-M went to the top, earning 138 points to complete its sectional team sweep.
The Bees went 1-2 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where Josh Perez won in 10 minutes, 1.41 seconds, just ahead of teammate Jack Martin, who was second with 10:03.33.
Dante Giannino contended in the long jump and rose to second place, his best leap of 21’1 ¾” topped only by Liverpool star Mark Vanmarter, who won with 22’1”.
Evan Donhauser took third place in the 110 high hurdles in 16.48 seconds. Jeff Mahar took third in the 400 sprint in 50.86 seconds, with Brennan LaQue fourth in 52.18 seconds. Sam Smith, in 1:01.05, grabbed third place in the 400 hurdles after a fifth (17.05 seconds) in the 110 hurdles.
Brian Mahar, Dan Walker, Connor Lunduski and Dave Mazurkiewicz got to fourth place in the 4×100 relay in 45.95 seconds. On his own, Mahar finished fourth in the 100 in 11.99 seconds and Mazurkiewicz (12.16 seconds) was fifth, while Mahar got fifth in the 200 in 24.29 seconds, with Walker sixth in 24.55 seconds. The Bees were sixth in the 4×400 in 3:36.34.
Griffin Lynch tied for fifth place in the pole vault, managing to clear 10’6”. Arden Kellner finished ninth in the mile in 4:46.66, while Mike Yorkey took eighth place in the discus with a throw of 114’7” and 11th in the shot put.
