The Skaneateles boys tennis team vied for top honors during Monday’s Section III Class C-1 championships, held at Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts – and the Lakers’ second doubles team of Ryan Bailey and Anthony Panasci would roll to the championship.
Bailey and Panasci got underway with a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Will Corbett and Vinny Marchese (Little Falls) and, in the semifinals, handled Zach Hardy and Ryan Rubenzahl (Lowville) 6-1, 6-3.
This set up a final between Bailey and Pansaci and Manlius-Pebble Hill’s duo of Trilok Reddy and Morgan Smith. Both sets were competitive, but Bailey and Panasci won them by equal 6-4, 6-4 margins.
In third singles, Connor Driscoll had quite a run. He swept Little Falls’ Eddie Rose 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round and, in the semifinals, battled past Manlius-Pebble Hill’s Ini Oguntola 6-3, 6-1 to reach the final, only to fall there to Clinton’s Noah Zaffino 7-5, 6-3.
Ethan Weldon, in the first round of second singles, fell to Collin Stewart (Lowville) 6-3, 6-3. The same thing happened to Luca Kunz and Griffin Walawender in first doubles as, in three sets, they fell to Clinton’s duo of Adam Blanks and Sam Olsen 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Driscoll, with his top-four finish, joined Bailey and Panasci in advancing to the Section III state qualifier later in the week.
