Jeanette Cudney, Ashley Kent and Jessica Macheda earned victories to help the Cazenovia girls track and field team claim fourth place in Monday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus High School.
All told, the Lakers earned 86 points, unable to keep pace with its fellow Lakers from Skaneateles, who won with 133 points. Westhill/Bishop Ludden (114 points) and host Marcellus (99 points) were second and third, respectively.
Though Marcellus senior Rachel Garn swept the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter titles, she did not run in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, and Cudney took full advantage, posting a top time of seven minutes, 57.04 seconds, with Westhill/Ludden’s Maddie Nowicki second in 8:02.69.
Cudney’s teammate, Malone Gabor, was third in 8:03.39, and would also earn a fifth-place time of 1:16.13 in the 400-meter hurdles. Meanwhile, Cudney did run in the 3,000, getting to fifth place in 11:48.50, with Mya Walters sixth in 12:22.99.
Meanwhile, Kent was part of a 1-2 Cazenovia sweep in the triple jump. Kent’s top attempt of 32 feet 1 ½ inches held off Liz Pittman, who was second with 30’8 ½”. This followed Kent’s third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.30 seconds, while Pittman cleared 8’6” in the pole vault for her own third-place effort.
Macheda, who tied for seventh in the high jump and was seventh in the 100-meter dash, made sure no one beat her in the long jump, as her top attempt of 15’11” beat out Kylie Bartlett (Altmar-Parish-Williamstown), who was second with 15’8 ¾”. Pittman finished ninth.
Walters, Colleen Stalder, Maria Stalder and Bailey Forrett gained third place in the 4×800 relay in 10:51.12, which Skaneateles (10:13.92) won as part of a relay sweep. Forrett, Grace Wheeler and the Stalder sisters finished fourth (4:29.33) in the 4×400.
Individually, Maria Stalder took fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:04.22, while Colleen Stalder was seventh in the 800. Tori Fischer cleared 4’8” in the high jump to finish fourth. Hannah Dain was fourth (79 feet) and Holly Eberle was sixth (73’2”) in the discus.
Bella Wheeler was ninth in the pentathlon with 1,637 points. Maureen Milmoe was seventh and Meredith Shephard ninth in the 1,500. Macheda, Kent, Julia Raleigh and Delaney Yates were fifth (55.43 seconds) in the 4×100 relay.
Cazenovia’s boys track team earned 27 points in its OHSL Liberty meet, most of them from Walker Nichols, who was second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.31 seconds behind Tyree Allen (Institute of Technology Central), who won in 15.95 seconds.
Nichols, with a long jump of 20’1”, had another second-place finish, this time behind ITC’s Delee Williams, who went exactly 21 feet, and Nichols added a fourth in the high jump, clearing 5’10”, while Reed Lucas threw the shot put 39’10 ½” and gained sixth place.
To top off his busy day, Nichols, paired with Alex Devine, Ryan O’Herien and Tom McNearney went 47.26 seconds in the 4×100 relay and finished fourth. Sean Satchwell was sixth in the 800 (2:06.89) and also took eighth in the mile in 5:01.68 and ninth in the triple jump. The Lakers were seventh in the 4×800 in 9:50.74, Alec Boone got seventh in the 400 sprint, where McNearney was eighth.
