When the Skaneateles girls track and field team had its meet with Marcellus last Wednesday afternoon postponed, it meant a bit more rest before the busiest stretch of the season got underway.
Were it not for the rainout, the Lakers would have faced four events in eight days, counting meets early next week against Altmar-Parish-Williamstown and Institute of Technology Central.
As it was, Skaneateles still would face lots of work in a short amount of time, and it started that stretch in the best way possible, going to Christian Brothers Academy’s Brother Basilian Invitational on Friday afternoon and winning a wide variety of events.
Raenah Campbell rolled to first place in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16 seconds flat, more than a second ahead of Jordan-Elbridge’s Emily Weichert (17.4 seconds). Then, in the 400-meter hurdles, Campbell earned a second title in 1:06.9, more than two seconds ahead of Indian River’s Emma Bonk, who was second in 1:09.2.
Skaneateles went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash, where Taylor Woodruff prevailed in 59.9 seconds and Shannon Roberts, in 1:03.5, fit into second place. That came right before the Lakers, in 51.2 seconds, edged host CBA (51.3 seconds) in a dramatic 4×100 relay.
Kaitlyn Neal was quick in the 1,500-meter run, her time of 4:52.2 enough to hold off teammate Madeline Adams, who went 4:53.8 to grab the runner-up spot. Also, Liz Dwyer needed 11:16.6 to beat the field in the 3,000-meter run, with Julia Willcox getting third place in 11:34.4.
In yet another 1-2 finish, Keely Gregg won the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, while Megan Molnar earned second place by clearing 7’6″. Aubreah Lynn topped 4’6″ to tie for second in the high jump, with Mia Grasso sixth as she cleared 4’4″. Woodruff went 14’5″ in the long jump to finish second behind Cortland’s Kayla Andrews, who went 14’7 1/2″.
Having already won the 4×100, the Lakers moved on to take the 4×400 relay in 4:18.9, with Homer (4:20.9) settling for second place.
Amanda Wetmore was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.7 seconds. Olivia Gage got to fifth place in the 200-meter dash (27.9 seconds) as Morel Malcolm took sixth place in the 800-meter run in 2:38.7.
In the boys portion of the Brother Basilian Invitational, Jeff Kringer got to third place in the 100 sprint, his time of 11.2 seconds just behind DeLee Williams (Institute of Technology Central), who won in 11.1 seconds. Patrick Biver added a third-place time of 23.2 seconds in the 200 sprint.
Cooper Watt and Tom Hagen tied for second in the high jump, clearing 5’4″, a number only Jordan-Elbridge’s Russ Hines (5’6″) could top. Eli Goodell was sixth in the long jump, going 16’9 1/2″.
Also, the Lakers finished third in the 4×100 relay in 47.4 seconds and also got to third place in the 4×400 relay in 3:43.5, adding a fourth place in the 4×800 relay in 8:45.9.
