At some point, all of the area’s track and field teams would have to deal with the bad weather, and not just avoid it. Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse-Minoa did so facing each other last Tuesday afternoon as part of a three-team meet with Fowler.
On the girls side, it ended in a sweep for the Spartans, ESM defeating J-D 82-49 and Fowler 102-19, while the Red Rams salvaged a split for itself by handling Fowler 93-28.
Eighth-grade Mia Montgomery led ESM’s charge. She had a first-place triple jump of 31 feet 9 inches and won the long jump with 15 feet 5 inches, adding a victory in the 100-meter dash in a time of 14.2 seconds.
Natalie Marra chimed in with first-place finishes in the 1,500-meter run (5:49.3) and 3,000-meter run (12:26.10), while also helping Brittany Kubecka, Gabby Pallotta and Juliette Miller push the Spartans to first place in the 4×800 relay in 11:27.8.
Nina Zesky did more than just clear 4’8” to win the high jump, running a leg in the Spartans’ victorious 4×100 relay team that finished in 56.1 seconds. Franceso Mastrobattisto swept the throwing events, taking the shot put with a 26-foot effort and heaving the discus 81’4”, while Ciara Short took the 400 hurdles in 1:18.9.
On J-D’s side, Rachel Fairbanks was victorious in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.3. Elena Haarer won the 800-meter run in 2:53.3 and paired with Fairbanks, Mackenzie Maxam and Catherine Keane to post 4:45.1 and win the 4×400 relay.
J-D’s boys track team won both sides of its meet, prevailing 68-59 over the Spartans and handling Fowler 115-17, with ESM also defeating Fowler 102-29.
During that boys meet, J-D’s Dylan Volk covered the 100-meter dash in 11.8 seconds, and also was superb in the triple jump, unleashing a top attempt of 40’8”. Volk also ran a leg in the 4×400 relay, where J-D prevailed in 3:53.6.
Joe Murphy cleared 5’6” in the high jump and also took first place in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.3. Zach Liebmann claimed the 200 sprint in 24 seconds flat, while Davis Elmore threw the discus 117’8” to win that event.
ESM saw Khari Flagg take the long jump with a leap of 19’ ¼” to beat J-D’s Will Cote, who went 18’4 ¼”, and Flagg adding a first-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 36’2 ½”.
On the oval, the Spartans had Jesse Perrone run the mile in 5:04 flat and later beat the field in the 3,200-meter run in 11:42.9.Jeremy McGrath claimed the 110 high hurdles in 16.5 seconds, while Perrone helped ESM win the 4×800 relay in 9:11.3.
