Onondaga County sheriff deputies have arrested a Connecticut man in connection with the fatal hit and run over the weekend in the town of Salina.
Chiragkumar Patel, 28, of Southington, Conn. was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting (death), a class D felony.
On April 27, Michael Mahoney, 48, of Liverpool, was riding a Trek bicycle north on Electronics Parkway around 2:40 a.m. when Patel struck Mahoney from the passenger side of his vehicle, then left the scene of the collision. Mahoney was pronounced dead at the scene by EMTs a short time later.
Patel’s vehicle, a 1998 Volvo, was discovered by road patrol deputies later in the morning in the parking lot of the Norstar Apartments on Henry Clay Boulevard. Later that afternoon, detectives located Patel in the 400 block of Old Liverpool Road. Detectives transported and arrested Patel at the sheriff’s office headquarters building. He was arraigned that evening in the town of Salina court and held in the Justice Center pending $200,000.00 cash or bond.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division Detectives in conjunction with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office are continuing their investigation.
