Marcellus served as the venue for a girls track and field meet Saturday co-hosted by the Mustangs and Skaneateles Lakers, and featuring many top local performers.
West Genesee’s tandem of Carly Benson and Lindsay Weaver went 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run, as Benson prevailed in four minutes, 56.62 seconds, edging past Weaver, who was second in 4:58.33 and later finished fifth (2:29.68) in the 800-meter run.
A 3,000-meter dash classic saw Marcellus’ Rachel Garn, on her own track, finishing in 10:20.68, not quite enough to catch Skaneateles star Kaitlyn Neal, who won in 10:20.06. WG’s Mary McGlynn (11:44.49) made her way to fifth place.
Abby Uczen, WG’s dominant force in the pole vault, won again here, clearing 8 feet 6 inches with fewer misses than South Lewis’ Christina Platt.
The Wildcats’ Valerie Pirro was second (1:11.94) to Indian River’s Emma Bonk (1:09.47) in the 400 hurdles, while Melissa Bakowski cleared 4 feet 10 inches in the high jump and finished fourth.
Pirrio, Benson, Bakowski and Iles were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:13.65, beating the Marcellus quartet of Garn, Zoe Higgins, Rickie Mixon and Makenzie Felicia, who was third in 4:24.78 as Skaneateles prevailed in 4:08.88. Bakowski added a fourth-place
Jordan-Elbridge’s Julia Hines nearly won the 400-meter dash, going 59.18 seconds to beat everyone in the 37-girl field except South Jefferson’s Skylar Pastor, who won in 58.26 seconds. In the long jump, Hines traveled 15’9 ¼”, earning third place.
For Marcellus, fast-rising freshman M.C. Coon went 13.57 seconds in the 100-meter dash final and finished third not far behind Baldwinsville’s Rebecca Lawrence, who won in 13.45 seconds, as Coon improved on her qualifying time of 13.72 seconds and got to 10th in the 200-meter dash.
Higgins went 18.10 seconds to reach the 100-meter hurdles finals, where she settled for eighth place in 18.39 seconds, later finishing seventh (1:14.06) in the 400 hurdles.
Johanna Sylcox threw the shot put 30’8 ¾” to finish fifth, just ahead of WG’s J’Nazia Anderson in sixth place. Also for the Mustangs, Tori Stopen got 11th place in the 400 sprint and Emily Townsend was 12th in the 1,500.
