Year after year, the Skaneateles boys golf team wants to do more than just make its way to the course and play a few pleasant spring rounds.
The Lakers expect to contend for titles, and it patiently waited through the deluge of bad early-April weather for a chance to prove itself against a tough OHSL Liberty division.
Three possible opening matches – a home opener with Marcellus on April 7, followed by a trip to Pine Grove to face Solvay (April 9) and a showdown with Westhill (April 11), had to be postponed in order for the courses to dry.
Finally, everything was in place Monday afternoon for a match against Solvay at Skaneateles Country Club, so the Lakers went out there and ignored high winds to post some low scores across the board, easily earning a 188-252 victory over the Bearcats.
That total of 188 was one shot off the team record of 187 for a single match, and what made it more impressive was that top star Doug Pinckney wasn’t even in the match, having gone to golf’s ancestral home at St. Andrews for a father-son competition with his dad.
Matt Lee led the way, earning birdies on his first three holes and adding a birdie on 9 against a lone bogey for a personal-best 33 for nine holes.
Not far behind, Jacob Patalino put together a 37, with Mike Jorgensen and Logan McAndrew both adding rounds of 39 and Jeremy Sisson contributing a 40.
And then the bad weather returned, coinciding with the school break. Thus, Skaneateles would have to wait until back-to-back home matches with Altmar-Parish-Williamstown and Jordan-Elbridge early next week (by which time Pinckney should be back) to get into the heart of its schedule.
