Not wasting any time, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling teams opened the 2013-14 season with each other as their neighborhood rivalry renewed on Wednesday night.
And this time it was the Warriors coming out on top, sweeping the lower weight classes and earning four pins on its way to defeating the Northstars 46-33.
Neither side had a full lineup for this meet. C-NS had to forfeit twice, at 113 and 195 pounds, giving free points to Audey Ashkar and Mark Williamson. At the same time, Liverpool did not wrestle at 126 pounds, so the Northstars’ Joe Mayers got a forfeit.
But in the 12 contested matches, the Warriors won in the three lightest weight classes. Sean Nadeau, at 106 pounds, needed just 1:24 to pin Ray Sorenson, while Jerry Nash (99 pounds) pinned David Ciciarelli at the end of the first period and Jerry Nash (120 pounds) blanked Joe Barber 7-0.
Two other Liverpool wrestlers won with falls. Anthony Ianno, at 132 pounds, waited until the second period to finish off C-NS’s Brandon Burham, the pin coming at 3:18, while at 285 pounds David Carnie got a dramatic pin over Jared West with just 20 seconds left in their match.
David Carnie fought a tougher match at 152 pounds, but still gave Liverpool three crucial points when he edged past Robert Rein 2-0, while Dareen Breen got close to a technical fall at 160 pounds, but still rolled to an 18-7 win over Anthony Ciarella.
C-NS did have its share of bright moments, too, including Joe Copani’s 29-second pin over his 138-pound opponent, Devin Delia. Sam Ruiz, wrestling at 170 pounds, needed exactly one minute to pin Jalen Barron, with Jarrett Norton (182 pounds) taking 1:13 for his pin over Jack Ragonese.
Some of the best action of the night came in the 220-pound match, where the Northstars’ Andres Anoceto did just enough to beat the Warriors’ Ron Wilson 7-5. Cody Richtmeyer won at 145 pounds when Liverpool’s Anthony Richardson had to take an injury default.
These two sides were together again on Saturday – only this time the event was at C-NS, where the Northstars were hosting its annual Andersen Tournament with a field of 21 teams.
C-NS, as the hosts, got the better of Liverpool in terms of the standings, earning 83.5 points for 10th place as the Warriors, with 75.5 points, took 12th place. Fulton won the tournament with 175 points, holding off South Jefferson (159.5 points) for the top spot.
Liverpool had two wrestlers reach the finals. Nash did so at 99 pounds, beating Matt Reese (Elmira) 4-1 in the semifinals before Fulton’s Joe Abelgore beat him 8-2 in the title match. At 113, Ashkar dominated Austin Coleman (Oswego) 9-0 in the semifinals, but also would fall in the finals, Massena’s Nate Marshall edging him 2-0.
Elsewhere, the Warriors saw Sean Nadeau take sixth place at 103, with Nash (120), Ianno (126) and Wilson (220) each logging seventh-place finishes.
West had C-NS’s best finish, losing in the semifinals at 285, but recovering to beat Oswego’s Eric Doviak 3-1 in the consolation bracket to finish third. Copani (138), Norton (170) and Anoceto (220) each had fourth-place finishes, with Barber sixth at 113.
C-NS is still at home this week for matches against Auburn and Rome Free Academy, plus the annual JV Blindmen’s Tournament on Saturday. Liverpool is home to face Fayetteville-Manlius before an appearance Saturday at the Falcon Duals at Fabius-Pompey.
