Followers of the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team were a bit stunned on Sept. 21 when, as part of round-robin play in the Marcellus Tournament, Class AA challenger Liverpool won both of its sets against the Bees.
That was the bad part. The good part was seeing the Warriors’ players boast about their rare accomplishment, which did not please B’ville one bit.
It just so happened that the two neighbors would meet again last Tuesday night, at Liverpool. Fired up by both the defeats and the talk that followed, B’ville wasted little time recording a 25-13, 25-14, 25-10 romp over the Warriors.
Up front, the Bees’ four-headed attack proved unstoppable. Madison Whitney led with 13 kills, adding four digs, while Amanda May had nine kills. Melissa Voyer earned eight kills as Rachel Aiello got six kills, plus five digs, two aces and two assists.
Meghann Smith did most of the Bees’ back line work, earning 27 assists, an average of nine assists per set, to go with three aces and two kills. Caryn Salce excelled on the defensive side with 11 digs. Meg Stonebarger, with 14 assists, and Emily Flohr, with eight kills and 15 digs, led Liverpool’s efforts.
During Thursday’s 25-3, 25-6, 25-8 romp over Henninger, many of the Bees’ reserves got extended playing time, and didn’t disappoint.
Meghan Andre and Lexi Lagoy both managed six aces, while Smith had three aces to go with her 23 assists. Maddy Price stepped up for six kills as Lagoy and Rebecca Lawrence both earned four kills. Shayna Webber and Riley Carlucci had three kills apiece.
When it returned to action on Wednesday night, Baldwinsville’s boys volleyball team won the first two sets over the combined Syracuse city squad 25-13 and 25-21, and then lost the third set 25-23 before finishing off the match 25-13 in the fourth set.
Delsean Griffith led the Bees’ front line, earning 10 kills. Dalton Mahan had five kills and two blocks, while Charles McAllister had four kills.
Ryan Gell and Mike Bernet earned three kills apiece as Pat Dubiel added three kills to his total of 17 assists and two aces. Dan Shorney, with eight assists, gave Dubiel some back-line help.
Both of the B’ville teams have matches this week against Central Square and Oswego.
