Fresh off its big Sept. 20 victory over Auburn, the Skaneateles girls swim team had to turn right around and face two of Section III’s most established powers in a short span.
This began with last Tuesday’s trip to Jamesville-DeWitt, where the Lakers got plenty of strong individual efforts, but could not keep up with the Red Rams’ depth in a 100-82 defeat.
Leah King, who finished second in the 50 freestyle in 28.36 seconds, rebounded for a victory in the 100 butterfly, her time of 1:07.14 beating J-D’s Erin Lumia by more than nine seconds.
Much of the meet, though, involved the Lakers earning runner-up finishes, including Haley Buchholz taking second place in both the 200 individual medley (2:36.22) and 100 backstroke where she finished in 1:12.57, less than a second behind J-D’s Hayley Schultz (1:11.70).
Megan Molnar was second in diving with 165.5 points as J-D star Taylor Cook had 201.25 points. Rachel Teixeria swam the 500 freestyle in 5:49 flat in another runner-up effort as Mary Teixeria took second in the 100 breaststroke.
In a tight 200 freestyle relay, Leah King, Rachel Teixeria, Kaleigh Nicholson and Maddie Bohrer finished in 1:55.74, inches behind J-D (1:55.07), with Buchholz joining Teixeria, Leah King and Halle King to finish second (4:09.50) in the 400 freestyle relay. Alden Coyne won twice for J-D, taking the 200 IM (2:27.77) and also winning the 500 freestyle (5:43.38).
Back home at the Community Center pool on Thursday night, Skaneateles took on Christian Brothers Academy, and again had to take a defeat, falling to the Brothers 93-82.
Putting things away, CBA won the first nine races before Buchholz, in a time of 1:09.91, took first place in the 100 backstroke. Mary Teixeria followed with a 100 breaststroke title (1:30.43) as Leah King, Halle King and Rachel Teixeria joined Buccholz for a time of 4:05.92 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Annie Fletcher led CBA, edging Rachel Teixeria, 2:06.03 to 2:07.21, in the 200 freestyle and later winning the 500 freestyle (5:36.88).
Julia Torell took the 200 IM (2:29.75) and 100 butterfly, where her time of 1:05.71 held off Leah King (1:06.22). In a close 100 freestyle, Halle King finished in 1:01.87, but CBA’s Mary Frances Ierlan prevailed in 1:01.59.
Skaneateles now heads on the road for a pair of meets, going to Mexico next Tuesday and to the Rochester area to face Marcus Whitman on Friday.
