Petrin sets record at Henninger Invitational

Again, Cicero-North Syracuse is sending out two golf teams – the Blue and Green sides – this fall, and once again Joey Petrin will lead the charge.

Petrin gave a strong indication of what he could accomplish when he set a tournament record and won individual honors at Monday’s season-opening Henninger Invitational at Drumlins Country Club.

Over nine holes, Petrin posted a 32, shattering the mark of 34 shared by West Genesee’s John Clare and Baldwinsville’s Billy Ward in previous editions of the event. In doing so, he beat Fayetteville-Manlius teammates Dan Thomas and Mike Lee by four shots.

Team-wise, C-NS Blue was sixth with 201, though just five strokes separated the Northstars from runner-up West Genesee (196), with Baldwinsville (198), Oswego (199) and Auburn (200) in between.

Luke Cavallo was closest to Petrin among the C-NS Blue golfers, posting a 39. Nate Hilt had a 42, with Shawn O’Neil (43) and Jonny Petrin (45) close behind and Ben Cummings managing a 49.

As for the C-NS Green side, it shot 227, which beat out Liverpool’s total of 228 for sixth place in the 10-team field. John Myers led C-NS Green, earning a 41, with Pat O’Donnell getting a 44, Eddie Szopinski adding a 45 and Brad Hamilton shooting a 46.

All of the Warriors’ golfers were within seven shots of each other. Andrew Salamino had a 43, edging out Dan Mort (44) to lead Liverpool. Mike Gabriel posted a 46, with Jullian Latocha (47), John Masucci (48) and Connor Perroti (50) close behind.

Back on its home course at Beaumont Country Club a day later, C-NS Blue immediately staked its claim as a CNY Counties League title contender, defeating F-M 191-193 as both sides easily beat Syracuse City’s total of 244.

Jonny Petrin stepped out of his brother’s shadow with a 33, tying the Hornets’ Mike Lee for individual honors. Joey Petrin, for his part, had a 38, as Cummings improved to a 39, Hilt got a 40 and Meyers, moving up from the Green team, had a 41. Just one other F-M player, Kyle Gilroy (39), managed to break 40.
